One Glitch in Huge Undertaking

I recently had a huge (to me) problem. I had been having some problems with my computer and had burned all my documents and pictures on a CD. Then the hard drive completely went. Since the computer is still under warranty, Gateway sent me a new hard drive. Fortunately Windows was already loaded on it. I was able to install that. Then I got reconnected to cable and next to AOL. I reinstalled my printer/scanner/copier, DVD player, and CD burner. I loaded the few programs I know I definitely want on my computer and basically it is working well.
I was able to copy my documents on to my new hard drive; however, for some reason I cannot copy my pictures. I get the message that the disk (same one as for documents) is read-only. Any suggestions? I use a lot of graphics and I spend a zillion hours collecting just the right thing for all sorts of uses. Some of them had my name.
I must have talked to about 20 tech support people before I was done. For the most part, I have a sense of accomplishment. I am retired with bad knees and a bum shoulder and worked under my desk -- where the CPU is set into its own cubbyhole -- with a flashlight in one hand and a screwdriver in the other!
Any idea of how I can retrieve my graphics and pictures?
