to legal immigrants who wait for years to enter the U.S.

Bush wants the U.S. to be a employment agency for Mexico

President George W. Bush unveiled a sweeping immigration proposal that could enable an estimated eight to 12 million illegal aliens in the United States to work here legally.

He wants to give legal status to foreign workers who obtain jobs in the United States as well as the millions of illegal immigrants already working in the country.

If employers are offering jobs to Americans that Americans are not willing to fill, then we ought to welcome to our country those who will fill that job," White House spokesman Scott McClellan said during his daily briefing.

TRANSLATION: It's another amnesty on the installment plan for illegal aliens, so Bush can pay back his campaign contributors with a unlimited flow of cheap labor and pick up more Hispanic votes.

If the millions of unemployed Americans amd millions of illegal aliens depressing wages bothers you, E-mail your Congressperson and 2 Senators and tell them NO! They are the ones who have to pass this, not Bush.

An even better way is to send FREE faxes with a organization like http://www.numbersusa.org All you have to do is register your name and address. Nothing to join. They even have letters already written for you and will tell you who your reps are if you don't know.

Actually, it's exactly what every Texas governor, Republican or Democrat, has advocated since the early 70s. Had 9-11 not happened, it probably would have happened in 2002. Way to early in the term to be significant in the '04 election.

The 8 million undocumented workers we have haven't depressed wages. The vast majority of these people are in California and Texas. They do jobs that others aren't willing to, contribute to our society. They have always been a vital component of the Texas economy, and one of the reasons for it's growth which other states would love to have.

Thanks for the facts. I know for some it's REALLY hard NOT to blame Bush for everything.

I've been waiting for reform on the illegal problem for years and NO party, state or fed,

wants to take on this issue. It appears now something has to be done, so I hope congress can hash things out for a good policy. I think the most important thing is to stop the FLOW of illegals on the border.

I truly believe that's what employers think. However, laws of supply and demand are pretty well established. People may not want to take those jobs at the low salaries the employers are offering, but I find it extremely hard to believe that people are unwilling to take most jobs at ANY salary. Employers must simply be forced to compensate low-skilled workers to a greater extent in order to attract them, or to invest in technology to minimize their reliance on large amounts of unskilled labor. This policy is a giant hand-out to two groups: those who broke the law to come/remain here and the businesses that take advantage of these people's willingness to work for next to nothing. This plan is clearly not in the best interest of the majority of Americans.

How much will it take for you to pick fruit for 8 hours in 95 degree weather and what it is going to cost me as a consumer to buy it?

I would agree with some of the current Bush plan, provided that it also put into place a securing of the border, using the national guard, or the military to assist the border patrol.

If this is not done, as many experts have noted, we could have as many as 25 to 30 million illegals in this country within the next 10 years, which would put so much pressure on our social welfare and medical care systems, that it would be bankrupt.

It depends if states welfare systems are closer to CAs or TXs. It's the experience in TX that when jobs get scarce, workers go home. There really has never been a welfare issue with illegals here in TX. Medical care is another story, however, since hospitals must provide medical care for everyone in need. For the first time this year, we'll be getting Federal $ to offset that expense. Somehow, medical care for needs to be worked into the system, perhaps with some sort of low cost group insurance with minimal healthcare included that all of the guest workers pay into or something like that.

I absoltely agree that Bush's new immigration policy is just a way to pick up more hispanic votes. I believe that the American Government needs to first place large fines on each company who employs these illegal aliens. Why reward people who sneak into our country illegally? They should be deported immediately. Then, maybe these large corporations will increase the pay and Americans will want to take these jobs. I don't know any Americans who would be willing to work for $4.00 an hour. Not to mention that many of these illegal workers are sending most of their money back to their families in Mexico. So, it's not really even being put back into the American economy. Until this new policy has come to light, I was a supporter of George Bush. Not anymore! Wesley Clark will have my vote!

As I said on another thread, the election has little to do with it. Bush intended to do this before 9-11, and it's the same type of program that every governor of Texas has backed since the 70s, and now it is more crucial than ever to be able to identify everyone currently living here and entering the country in the future. A program similar to this is the only way we will ever be able to control our southern border.

Large corporations do not typically hire illegals; small businesses & individuals do. Undocumented workers are paid minimum wage, and with the cost of living, they are spending the majority of their paychecks right here. They pay property taxes and sales taxes which are the most regressive of all, and I've heard from an immigration lawyer that a good percentage of them also pay income tax and FICA which they will never benefit from.

Getting a job is not a reward. It is a negotiated contract between employer & employee that benefits society. Not only is it impossible to identify, round up, and deport 8 million individuals, our economy needs them.
