GM recalls more than 800,000 cars

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

DETROIT -- General Motors Corp. is recalling more than 800,000 cars because of a power steering defect that has may have led to eight injuries.

About 750,000 cars in the United States and about 55,000 in Canada - all made between Jan. 1, 1996 and Oct. 31, 1997 - are affected, GM said Monday.

The models are the 1996 Buick Regal, 1997 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, 1997-98 Oldsmobile Cutlass, Chevrolet Lumina, Monte Carlo, Malibu, and 1998 Oldsmobile Intrigue cars. Also, some 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix and Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, and 1997-98 Buick Regal cars are being recalled.

Drivers have experienced intermittent losses of power steering when making left turns, especially at low speeds, GM said. Some drivers could experience higher resistance when turning left, followed by unintended power assist to the right, the company said.

Eight nonfatal injuries have been reported that may be related to the defect, the automaker said.

GM will begin instructing car owners in February to bring the affected vehicles to dealers for repairs.

Eight "injuries"? I guess they sprained a pinky? Too bad GM will pass on the cost of all

this fuss on new car buyers. I'd like to thank the trial lawyers....

You don't know the extent of the injuries, they weren't stated.

You forgot that they are also recalling a very large number of 2004 Saab 93 cars because they are apparently stalling for no reason.

I read this last week, and cannot seem to find the link online....perhaps someone else could find it.

This is the problem....we have american car companies manufacturing their products outside the US, and foreign car companies manufacturing their cars inside the US. Please tell me what is wrong with this picture?

I got into a large argument with my father-in-law about his "american" car and my "foreign" car. I showed him the facts that more of the final assembly of my car (67%) was done in the US than his car (18%), to which he just huffed and walked away.

I haven't seen the recall notice for the Saabs, but thanks for posting that info.

Saab to recall stalling sedans.

The government is investigating Saab's 2003 9-3 sedan after receiving 16 complaints of the vehicles stalling without warning.

The stalling led to at least one reported accident but no injuries, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday. The stalling allegedly occurred during cruising, acceleration and deceleration at speeds of up to 40 mph.

Saab spokesman Kevin Smith said the company is aware of the problem and believes it can be solved if dealers reprogram the vehicle's computer with 2004 software. He said Saab intends to recall the vehicles, but hasn't yet notified consumers.
