Martha Stewart Guilty!

WOW! I guess I'm surprised Martha Stewart was found guilty on all four counts. I figured she'd get a slap on the wrist, at most. Anyone think she'll do jail time? Is this a *good thing* ?

on the clinton thing, he has a right to his privacy...he should never have had to tell the whole country what happened...and really looking at both of them i dont want to know what went on, none of my business...i just feel bad for hillary and chealse(sp).

First, I would like to note that people are generally convicted for cover-up crimes when the prosecution does not have a strong case for the criminal conduct itself. There is little proof that she approved the selling of stock based on inside knowledge, so this is why the prosecution only convicted her for the false statement. Moreover, I think that there is a 50% chance that she would have told the lie regardless of whether or not she committed the actual crime because the situation was so incriminating in the first place and she didn't want her reputation damaged further. Anyway, I don't think that the prosecution had a very strong case against her concerning the sale of stock itself.
As far as the cover-up, I think that the public perception of her weighed in heavily on the juror's minds when they decided to convict. I don't think that celebrities should get special treatment by the justice system, but I believe that she was judged more on her celebrity image than on the evidence, which is equally unfair. I just think that if this had been some corporate male, this would not have been pursued at all, much less convicted.
I am thinking about bringing a suit against George Bush because his lie has done a hell of a lot more harm than Martha's, but his false statement has been brushed under the rug. Maybe if Martha had been one of the "good old boys" she would have gotten off. Oh, the irony!
What ever happened to the Tyco executive? (this is just one example) Was he publicly persecuted for what he did? No, and what he did was far worse than what Martha allegedly did.
