Martha Stewart Guilty!

WOW!  I guess I'm surprised Martha Stewart was found guilty on all four counts.  I figured she'd get a slap on the wrist, at most.   Anyone think she'll do jail time?   Is this a *good thing* ?

I'm not a fan of Martha Stewart's, but I personally would

rather see the law come down with a heavy hand to corporate

corruption that resulted in many people losing their entire

life savings. Punishing Martha is fine - but the ultimate

penalties should be doled out to people like Bernie Ebbers

and Scott Sullivan of WorldCom and the head of Enron and

Global Crossing, etc....these people defrauded their investors

and many of them wound up losing their life savings. I'm

more concerned with having justice served on people who directly

hurt American investors than with worrying about Martha Stewart.

You make an excellent point - compared to Enron, Martha Stewart is the little fish in the big pond. However, in terms of Martha's crimes, I agree with what's been written, that she's paying for her name - not to mention her monsterous gall in thinking herself above the law.

You make an excellent point --- the people who are responsible for squandering pension funds and costing investors millions are the people who should definitely go to prison.

On the other hand, Martha WAS a successful stockbroker for a long time. It's not like she was so busy baking cookies that she just didn't realize that insider tips were illegal.

I was watching Bill Maher over the weekend. One of the panelists (the right wing one) said that the whole Martha thing was

I agree, but at the same time it is hard to "resist" this sort of information.

I really think it's a shame that they have come down so hard on Martha. Yes, she did lie to the prosecutors. But folks, let's look around us. For the last 5 years or more we have had CEOs, CCOs, presidents of large companies, etc. stealing billions of dollars from their investors and robbing their employees retirement funds. Some of these people are fighting a minimum punishment and some have received a slap on the hand. What's the problem here? I'd like to think it is not gender based but I don't know.

No, but lying under oath is called perjury, and is illegal, and an attorney should know that.

My opinion is that she has done nothing that anyone else with lots of invested money has done. She just got caught. I am not saying that it is right, but to reach the financial status that she and others have acheived, one has to assume that there is much more of this going on. In some ways, I think she is a scape goat, targeted because of her position. To be "squeaky clean" and "perfect", you open yourself to LOTS of criticism. I am just worried that I won'tbe able to get any new recipes!!!:)

I don't think Martha would have been treated differently if she were a man, however we probably wouldn't even know who Mark Stewart was and in that regard, he would not have been all over the paper.

The problem is, is that she committed perjury in a court of law, and when you swear on the bible, you are "supposed" to tell the truth. So in that regard, good old Martha apparently has low morals, when she's trying to sacrifice herself, pretty sad actually because she conveys, convey being the important word how wonderful she is and as a result of this, I believe her personality is made for tv just like her show.

Lying under oath is nothing to feel sorry about, its plain wrong.

I think there was a huge witch hunt against Martha. I think a lot of people resented her for being a successful woman with a multi-million dollar enterprise.
