Bush called for permanent extension of these tax breaks in his State of the Union address but not reform of the alternative minimum tax, which denies families most of the Bush write-offs.

Because of the AMT most "middle class" and lower Americans will NEVER be able to benefit from his "Tax Cuts" for "everyone" but the wealthy sure will be able to benefit from those cuts.  By the end of Bush's "plan," middle class America will be completely cut out of Bush's "Tax Cuts" while all his cronies will still be raking in billions.

This is the guy that is supposed to be for everyone?  The guy has always been and always will be for the elite 10% of America.  The rest of us are only here to provide that 10% with money and to die in his wars.

This is where conservatives and liberals differ. I thought one of the basic tenents of American democracy was that in compassion the country would help-out the less fortunate. This is because the welfare of the nation benefits all. I never realized how much greed existed in the "haves", but they resent any services or breaks going to the "have-nots." that they don't get. They want to pay the same percentage, despite the tax breaks lower that percentage. What I find most interesting is that many conservatives are also Christians.

What skewed logic. What does Bush's cutting taxes have to do with the fact states can't control THEIR budgets? You have bought into every governer's dream- feed the line that because the feds cut taxes, we must raise ours.

I expect my government to behave like I run my household. If an unexpected situation arises and I need income, I cut back on something else of less importance to make up for it. Only WE can resist raising taxes and demanding cuts.

The goverment has been getting away with their sham for too long and people like you take it.

I agree, but in trying to classify $200,000 a year as rich, you have to take into conisderation the area in which the person lives.

$200,000 a year in Atlanta, GA goes a lot further than $200,000 a year in NYC. This is my point.

I think if the cutoff were closer to $1,000,000. (perhaps not quite that high, but you get my point) then fewer people would be able to debate that at this level, these people are definitely in the wealthy group.

If you have children & received the tax 'credit' last year maybe that's why you owed this year.

Well said! The hypocrisy of Bush claiming to be a "compassionate conservative".

Still, I have to add here...NYC is probably one of the very FEW places in our country where $200,000/yr might not be considered 'wealthy'.

200K is far from poor even in the NYC area, but it is also far from rich either.

By law the states can't borrow. GWB keeps passing "un-funded mandates", causing states to use precious resources (during a sluggish economy) on GWB programs. He cut taxes so the federal government couldn't help the states, then he went to war with Iraq so our children would have to foot his deficit. I hope you don't rule you house with such calous self-interest.

<<$200,000 a year in Atlanta, GA goes a lot further than $200,000 a year in NYC. This is my point.>>

I recognize this as true, but what I don't understand is why you want to introduce this fact into a question on federal taxes

I didn't pick the $200,000 limit, this is Kerry's figure. What I don't understand is why these people don't want to assist the less fortunate.
