I am happy to see that we are doing something!

FALLUJAH, Iraq - Hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi troops in tanks, trucks and other vehicles surrounded the turbulent city of Fallujah on Monday ahead of a major operation against insurgents blamed for the grisly slayings of four American security contractors last week.

U.S. commanders have been vowing a massive response to pacify Fallujah, one of the most violent cities in the Sunni Triangle, the heartland of the anti-U.S. insurgency north and west of Baghdad.

The same way to force *any* bully to respect you. You stand up to them and prove that you will not take it. The result will be no more disrespect of our dead. Watch and see. If another pacifist takes over, you will see this kind of thing again. History has proven this.

No, we can't force them to respect us...but we can force them to fear and hate us even more (if that's possible).

I completely disagree with your entire post and also don't mind if they fear us. They *should* fear us and think twice before pulling something like this again.

Fear does not preclude further attacks, not in the long run. Look at psychology studies. I'd guess that fear will engender greater feelings of helplessness, and in turn that leads to one of two things--apathy or anger. The apathy isn't good for democratic principles but it's not as dangerous as anger. What I've read about Iraq seems to indicate a culture with a deep seated belief in revenge and honor. Add anger and it's downright deadly. Do you really think they'll be completely cowed? Or will the anger turn inwards? Have you ever played that game where two players take turns slapping their hands down in turn? The hand on the bottom always pulls out and slaps itself on the top. Nobody WINS. So much for "hearts and minds"!

I think you are confusing fear with respect. If respect were that easy to get, we would already have it from all the citizens of Iraq.

When you run away from a bully he gets bolder. These people thought they could get away with this horrible behavior because we cut and ran the last time it happened. They consider us a "Paper Tiger". We can not allow these types of actions to continue. I guarantee you this will be the last you see until we have another pacifist in the white house - then we are open game once again.

These people hate us. Yes they have made that quite clear. Since we can't have love, I'll settle for respect.

It is possible to respect someone you hate. They did *not* respect us because we cut and ran the last time they dragged our dead around town for hours for all the world to see. They will respect us in the future.

Nobody said there would be no more future attacks. There will be no more dragging the dead through the town and hanging them on bridges, though. You can count on that.

They already hate us enough to kill *themselves* in order to kill us - how much angrier can we make them? Their very culture teaches them to hate us because we do not practice their fanatical wacko religion. The *only* way to appease them is to convert to radical fundamental muslim. Are you willing to do that? If not you should be willing to fight. There is no appeasement with these madmen. Haven't they made that clear enough to you????

Did it ever occur to you that they think we are the bully? They aren't taking it anymore.
