I am happy to see that we are doing something!

FALLUJAH, Iraq - Hundreds of U.S. and Iraqi troops in tanks, trucks and other vehicles surrounded the turbulent city of Fallujah on Monday ahead of a major operation against insurgents blamed for the grisly slayings of four American security contractors last week.

U.S. commanders have been vowing a massive response to pacify Fallujah, one of the most violent cities in the Sunni Triangle, the heartland of the anti-U.S. insurgency north and west of Baghdad.

We have given only one reason why we invaded Iraq. That reason was that Saddam was threatened with force if he did not comply to the U.N. resolutions. He was given a deadline, and that deadline passed without compliance. We at that time had to live up to our word and use force, or look weak and stupid. We chose strength.

The rest of the subjects that have been mentioned are some of the good things that have come out of that decision. His ties to Al Queida have been proven, Saddam is now gone. There will be no more filling of mass graves, no more rape rooms.

He didn't use a "stick of dynomite" on the Kurds. He GASSED them. The pictures of this event are HORRIBLE. His WMD were clearly there and had been used. He was also trying to develop nuclear weapons. This has been proven. You are lucky we stopped him before he was able to develop them further.

About them wanting us to go home - We want to go home too. We will as soon as the job is done, BUT NOT UNTIL. Did you read the article posted earlier about our success over there? http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/editorial/outlook/2487509

Did you really read those definitions before posting? Respect is the correct word. Deference doesn't work at all.

<<"2. To avoid violation of or interference with: respect the speed limit.">>

And why does one respect an arbitrary number posted on a sign? Only because of the negative consequences one may receive if it is not respected.

You're right. We are occupying their country. That means we are in charge and get to decide what we will put up with and what we won't. Over the past year, Iraqis have been free to protest and speak their mind without any interference from us. That's a wonderful lesson in free speech. You seem to have the idea that we must also accept murder and mayhem if that's what a few desperate thugs want to dish out. That is not acceptable, and will not be tolerated. It is our responsibility to provide for the safety and security of the troops, contractors, and native population who are working together to build a better future for Iraq.

It is you who are confusing the two. How many times must we say, we don't care how the people who danced on the bodies of our people FEEL. We don't care if the Baathist thugs who set the ambush FEEL respect for us. They will be killed or captured and sent to prison. They do not respect us for the way we responded in Somalia. They are waiting to see if we will allow them to get away with what happened. Doing so, will only earn their derision & scorn.

What is important is that others like them respect our strength and think twice before following in their footsteps. For now, we must show our power and determiniation in order to earn the respect of ordinary citizens of Fallujah.

Also the hearts and minds we have won in other areas of Iraq are in danger of being lost if we loose the respect we have worked hard to EARN by allowing Fallujah to degenerate into a lawless haven from which rebels & terrorists can operate in safety and inflict their violence on other areas of Iraq.

I am sickened by what is going on over there and although i understand the need for revenge I wonder if its really just a few bad guys who want the U.S. out of Iraq ? or is it the majority ? I wish we could hear the truth from someone who knows. Because if the majority of the Iraqi people want us to leave I wholeheartedly agree. I hate that our men and women are suffering and dying to give them freedom and democracy if they dont want it. I truly hope we're not there just to get the oil production up and running for our own selfish purposes. I agree that we need to capture or kill the insurgents but not if it means making things worse than they already are.

Wrong. You drive safely because of your concern for others. You generally obey traffic laws becuase of your respect for civil authority. You drive 55 instead of 60 because you respect the power of the police to stop you and give you a ticket.

What on earth are you talking about? The majority of Iraqis want us to stay, and their concern is that we are going to leave too soon before a proper democracy can take hold. A large portion of Iraqi's already report that their lives are better than under Saddam, and many more expect it to be by next year, and that before they have even started to see the effects of the $87 billion on their economy.
