Your thoughts on this evening's speech?

Did the speech assure you that there is a specific workable plan?

Speech was first of six before June 30 handover.

Bush outlined five broad steps to restore Iraqi sovereignty and get the country back on its feet:

  • Handing over authority to a sovereign Iraqi government.

  • Establishing security.

  • Continuing to rebuild Iraq's infrastructure.

  • Encouraging more international support.

  • Moving toward a national election in Iraq that "will bring forward new leaders empowered by the Iraqi people."

Got a chuckle from your reference to Depression-era parents. Maybe it's a sweeping generalization but it was certainly true of my parents!

I am totally unimpressed by the professional and ethical standards of this administration. Many statements have been made that Bush is forceful and straight-shooting and doesn't flip flop. Well, one can be firmly convicted that the earth is flat, forcefully insist on it and refuse to change one's mind after seeing photographs from space but that doesn't make one right. Being adamant and WRONG is no great achievement. And I could rant all day long about the vice-president and the civilian leadership of the Pentagon--but in the words of Powell, let's not go there.

I see no point in giving the current lot a second chance to lose even more lives and fund a war that seems to be "buy now, pay later". And Bush plans to keep troops in Iraq "as needed" for an indefininate period of time. Where's the exit strategy in that?

In short, all the praise and gilding in the world can't change what isn't there in the first place. Wisdom, diplomacy, and a long term plan to keep the nation safe and at peace are sadly lacking. Wish there was a political candidate who looked capable of offering those precious gifts but that too seems to be lacking.

"Also you think he and the administration didn't plan for this at all or plan the war at all? Read some books, better yet read a book called "Plan of Attack" by Bob Woodward and you'll understand better what the planning was "behind the scenes"

Humm who needs to calm down? This is a debate board not personal.

First my post didn't say the "war" was not planned , it said there was no "exit strategy" Planning the war seemed to be one of the top priorities of the administration, an exit strategy was not part of that planning.

"I doubt any President would have been up to some's expectations unless of course you had no dislike for him whatsoever."

All presidents have to face the challenge of public scrutiny. All presidents have good and bad points. We can't expect perfection from anyone. Most people don’t have a personal relationship with their countries leaders, so can’t like or dislike them. They are judged on what they do while in office.

I have been voting since the Nixon vs. Humphrey election, which is a good example. Everyone knows about Watergate, which we all agree was bad; however, Nixon was a great statesmen/diplomat in foreign policy. His trip to China as ambassador of the US, after he left office was very beneficial.

"You say his speech didn't show a plan...I heard one,"

On this point, we will have to agree to disagree.

Especially when said government continues to ask for BILLIONS of dollars for this poorly planned and poorly executed foray into Iraq.

LOL, what in my post made you feel "I" needed to calm down? You quoted a paragraph of mine and it just said that I feel the administraion did plan for this war and I reccomended a book on the subject. So I'm just a tad bit confused to why you think I am not calm? Are you upset I told YOU to clam down? I can go back and find what made me say that in your post if you'd like? Also what did I say that made you think I was taking this personal and wasn't aware of the fact that this is a debate board?? I am actually quite curious.
