How about it - is "cultural" practice a valid defense here?

Rochester Teen Says She Was A Slave

by Jim Aroune and Judy Mendoza

She said she was sold into slavery, forced to clean a family's home, and have sex with the man of the house, the 15 year old told authorities

She said that her mom sold her to the family and now her mother and the man who raped her face charges.

Bekim Lapjani, 21 of Rochester, faces first degree rape charges. Authorities say he paid the girl's family $3,000 for the teenage.

All involved apparently emigrated from Eastern Europe raising question as to whether the enslavement was a cultural practice.

“Could that be raised as an issue later on? I guess it's possible. The defense attorney needs to decide whether to raise an issue and then a judge or jury would have to decide to give it any weight,” said Doug Randall, Assistant District Attorney.

The girl's mother is accused of felony assault and coercion counts. Authorities say she forced her daughter to live with the family on weekends for a year. She and the girl's father both face charges of endangering the welfare of a child.

R News is not releasing the name of the parents, so as not to identify the girl. Both she and her sister are in foster care.

Lapjani and the girl's mother have both been released from jail on bail.

Yes I agree human explotation is illegal in many countries.

Maybe it is legal in buy someone in some countries or at least allowed but the second you bring you so called slave to a civilized nation you should be penalized for dealing in the slave trade and your slave be given automatic freedom and no payment given to the ex-owner.

I honestly didn't know that. I went back to the TOS and Rules of Play and don't see that anywhere. Where are THESE particular rules posted? I credited the writers and the article itself indicates that agency it was gotten from.

I'm sorry Mom. Does this mean I can't go out and play today?

Not sure if it is a TOS rule, but it is regarded asa courtesy to other posters as well as a copywright courtesy to the person who wrote the article or organization that carried the article.

By the way, trafficking of women and girls is not an accepted legal practice anywhere around the world from what I understand. It might happen in some cultures but it isn't legal.

One can even post the link only, unfortunately some news sources don't keep their stories on file. While others archive them. CNN & BBC are ones that can be relied upon the keep the link live. NY Times & Time mag. both
