Briton feared dead in Saudi attack.
A Briton is feared to be among six people killed in a shooting in Saudi Arabia.
Diplomats from the British embassy in Riyadh have arrived in the eastern city of Khobar where gunmen opened fire on the offices of two oil companies before taking hostages at a residential compound.
Two security guards are believed to be dead and up to three of those killed are thought to be Westerners.
According to reports, the terrorist group al Qaida claimed it had carried out the attacks on Khobar.
The message - which has not yet been confirmed as genuine - was signed by the al Qaida Organisation in the Arabian Peninsula.
A Foreign Office spokesman said the British team left the Saudi capital as soon as they heard of the incident.
According to witnesses, four gunmen in military-style dress attacked the oil company offices and then engaged Saudi security forces in a shoot-out at a residential compound, where they took the hostages.
A Western diplomat confirmed that a total of three compounds in Khobar, 250 miles north-east of Riyadh, were attacked.
Mahmoud Ouf, an Egyptian consular officer in Riyadh, said Rami Samir Al-Goneimi, an Egyptian 10-year-old, was killed in one of the compounds.
His father worked for Apicorp, the Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation.
