U.S. marine beheaded, Iraqi website claims
Last Updated Sat, 03 Jul 2004 18:26:38
BAGHDAD - U.S. authorities in Iraq are checking into a message on a website claiming that Iraqi militants have beheaded a U.S. marine.
A written message on the extremist Islamic site said Cpl. Wassef Ali Hassoun of West Jordan, Utah, was held hostage by a group called the Ansar al-Sunna Army. Hassoun, 24, was born in Lebanon.
"We would like to inform you that the marine of Lebanese origin, Hassoun, has been slaughtered. You are going to see the video with your very eyes soon," the message said. It was dated Saturday.
Hassoun was reported missing on June 20.
On June 27, the Arab satellite television network Al-Jazeera broadcast a tape showing him blindfolded.
The Ansar al-Sunna Army said Americans would be safe if they left Iraq.
The website where the message was posted has carried material from other militant groups, including the beheading of U.S. engineer Paul Johnson two weeks ago.

I heard it was posted on that web site, but that the military hadn't confirmed it.
It appears to be fact..... else why claim it.
Poor young man. My deep sympathies to his family.
I just found this on the BBC site. Hope this one is true!!!
