Father of boy who shot friend gets 3 years

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The father of a boy who shot and killed a playmate with a loaded gun he found stashed under a sofa was sentenced to nearly three years in prison, followed by probation during which he must speak monthly on gun safety.

Louis Mevec Sr. was sentenced Friday for felony culpable negligence in the 2003 death of Sean Caroline II. Mevec, who owned the .357-caliber Magnum used to kill the 12-year-old friend of his son Louis, was convicted last month.

During his father's trial, 14-year-old Louis testified that a small group of Largo Middle School students had skipped school and were playing video games at Mevec's apartment when he pointed the gun at Sean and shot him between the eyes.

"I blame you and only you for my son's death," Sean Caroline, Sean's father, told Louis Mevec Sr. in court Friday. "My wife and I are also serving a sentence ... but we got no trial. Ours is a life sentence."

Circuit Judge Brandt Downey sentenced Mevec, 53, to the maximum six-year prison term, but suspended more than half of it and replaced it with probation. His remaining sentence is 34 months, but with good behavior he could be released by late 2006.

The Caroline family had asked that Mevec be required to speak on gun safety after his release.

The younger Louis Mevec was sent to a juvenile facility and is now living in New York with his mother and younger brother.

"But they best be prepared to pay the price if it is used on someone I love in an act of carelessness and stupidity(discribing most hand gun owners I know)"

And most of the gun owners (hand gun and otherwise) *I* know are responsible with their weapons, so that can't be used as a generalization. Either way, there are going to be people who are responsible and people who are not. I'm not worried about going to jail because my kid shoots someone else with my gun...because my kid doesn't have access to my gun.

"he figures racking the chamber will get the intruders attention, and if that person is still foolish enough to climb the stairs, he will be met with a faceful of OO buckshot."

Yes, I've heard that, too, that just the sound of a shotgun is enough to set the lowlifes running back to whatever rock they live under, LOL! :P In fact, when my husband & I were first getting into handguns and learning to shoot and so forth, in our gun safety course, they brought up the beneficial "sound" of a shotgun, too. Yet they also cautioned us that because shotguns don't hold much in the way of ammunition, if you DO have to shoot, you'd better have another firearm to back it up, if the lowlifes persist...

Exactly. Characterizing gun owners as brain dead idiots is just another scare tactic. Yes, there are news stories about this, but if you compare the incidents with the number of gun owners throughout the country, while tragic, it is NOT a major percentage. These scare tactics used to work on me until I learned to shoot and handle a gun safely, complete with training. As I get to know the gun owners in my area down at the shooting range, I'm finding all the hysterical rhetoric against private citizens being too stupid to own guns, is sheer fiction.

Do you guys get the feeling we've beaten this topic to death or shot it to death?

I mean I'm as pro gun as you get but whenever facts or statistics are posted those posts are either completely ignored or picked apart for the one bit of subjective commentary and attacked there.

Not 1 and I mean 1 gun control advocate in 185 posts has been able to post a shred of evidence supporting their "theory".

We keep going back and forth about responsible gun owners, criminals with guns, fear of guns, security systems, etc but no one has successfully argued the pro-gun control side of the issue. Every arguement is "I feel", "I think", "wouldn't it be better if", nothing concrete. It isn't a coincidence...Facts vs Fears...no contest.

Guys and Gals I say we fire our 6 shooters in the air and mosey over to the bar...this debate is closed and it was as one sided as a Reagan election.

I agree we've covered the topic quite well. You can bring a horse to water but you can't force him to drink, Hee! Hee! What we have accomplished -- and I think it's an important thing we did -- for those who come to this board in the future, we provided a coherent pro gun argument and even posted links to resources to help dispell some of the wealth of misinformation out there. That information will live on and that's a very good thing. :))
