Father of boy who shot friend gets 3 years

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The father of a boy who shot and killed a playmate with a loaded gun he found stashed under a sofa was sentenced to nearly three years in prison, followed by probation during which he must speak monthly on gun safety.

Louis Mevec Sr. was sentenced Friday for felony culpable negligence in the 2003 death of Sean Caroline II. Mevec, who owned the .357-caliber Magnum used to kill the 12-year-old friend of his son Louis, was convicted last month.

During his father's trial, 14-year-old Louis testified that a small group of Largo Middle School students had skipped school and were playing video games at Mevec's apartment when he pointed the gun at Sean and shot him between the eyes.

"I blame you and only you for my son's death," Sean Caroline, Sean's father, told Louis Mevec Sr. in court Friday. "My wife and I are also serving a sentence ... but we got no trial. Ours is a life sentence."

Circuit Judge Brandt Downey sentenced Mevec, 53, to the maximum six-year prison term, but suspended more than half of it and replaced it with probation. His remaining sentence is 34 months, but with good behavior he could be released by late 2006.

The Caroline family had asked that Mevec be required to speak on gun safety after his release.

The younger Louis Mevec was sent to a juvenile facility and is now living in New York with his mother and younger brother.

"And this is one reason I would never own a gun. Apparently owning a gun gives you the right to possibly manipulate the legal system to "save yourself"."

Oh my....I'm afraid if you stretch any further your arms may come clean off....

>>If that is the case I'll support your right to refuse gun ownership providing you support my right to own and carry one.<<

As I did state in a previous post.

But I will add that in the state I live in we put conceal and carry to the people who voted it down. When the republicans took over house and senate in our state they repealed the vote. So if I come across as being "unreasonable" to those who support gun owners I guess this is one reason.

In my state there is a required reasonable amount of time a gun owner is supposed to notify local police, once the owner is aware of the theft. In my rabid anti gun state of CA (yet still not as bad as some) we're already fingerprinted, the gun's serial #, make & model already linked and registered with our driver's license or state ID. Same scenario with a stolen car used to kill someone, or in a robbery. How can anyone PROVE we parked the car, locked it and took the keys with us?! We can't 100%. Just to get a DL we're fingerprinted as well. Heck, the gov't probably has our preferred brand of TP in their computers somewhere, LOL! Carelessness & irresponsibility are one thing, but labeling everyone with one broad stroke is ludicrous and wrong. By the way, in CA laws are very explicit re adult responsibility when juveniles get ahold of guns inadequately safeguarded, also, as in the OP case on this thread.

So...you don't like what your local government did with regard to a conceal and carry decision, and you feel the need to take it out on anyone who doesn't agree with your vote that was shot down?

Ah, and only gun owners lie to protect themselves, right? Get real.

Just admiting a little bias on my part. I was not taking anything out on anyone. Our discussions were all "what ifs", were they not? I gave my opinions, you gave yours...end of story.

"Every time I've asked someone why they've bought a gun, their response has been 'for protection'. "
There are lots of reasons people own guns: collecting, hunting, sport (skeet shooting, belonging to a gun club) and sometimes (usually included with these other things) protection.

I live in-city and of all the people I currently know with guns (sadly, quite a few & not all from my area of

People live in fine neighborhoods and get burglarized. You don't have to be in a bad area or deal with unsavory people to need a gun or its protection. Just the possibility of ownership in an area can lower crime rates.

People in 'fine neighborhoods' around here have security systems and burglar alarms.

Just a small note while we're on the subject... "Not one collects, hunts (they are all handguns), or belongs to a gun club."

Many handguns are fine for hunting, even up to deer-sized game. Most of your decent-barrel length .357's, .41's and .44's are good out to about 100 yards or so in the hands of someone who can shoot accurately and knows the importance of bullet placement. I myself have used my .41 in area's where it's easier to carry than even a carbine.

In regards to the OP, I think the sentence was fair if somewhat lighter than I would want.
