Father of boy who shot friend gets 3 years

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- The father of a boy who shot and killed a playmate with a loaded gun he found stashed under a sofa was sentenced to nearly three years in prison, followed by probation during which he must speak monthly on gun safety.

Louis Mevec Sr. was sentenced Friday for felony culpable negligence in the 2003 death of Sean Caroline II. Mevec, who owned the .357-caliber Magnum used to kill the 12-year-old friend of his son Louis, was convicted last month.

During his father's trial, 14-year-old Louis testified that a small group of Largo Middle School students had skipped school and were playing video games at Mevec's apartment when he pointed the gun at Sean and shot him between the eyes.

"I blame you and only you for my son's death," Sean Caroline, Sean's father, told Louis Mevec Sr. in court Friday. "My wife and I are also serving a sentence ... but we got no trial. Ours is a life sentence."

Circuit Judge Brandt Downey sentenced Mevec, 53, to the maximum six-year prison term, but suspended more than half of it and replaced it with probation. His remaining sentence is 34 months, but with good behavior he could be released by late 2006.

The Caroline family had asked that Mevec be required to speak on gun safety after his release.

The younger Louis Mevec was sent to a juvenile facility and is now living in New York with his mother and younger brother.

"Pirates of Silicon Valley" -- yes! I did see it and it was interesting. Hall DID do an excellent job! :) The Breakfast Club, as well as Ferris, are like going down memory lane and seeing these actors when they were young and just beginning.

"Your welcome. :) Here's another about a woman protecting herself:

Good example of how you don't actually shoot someone for it to be effective.

My husband is a Microsoft ISV (independent software vendor) and so he watches a lot of web casts where Gates talks about business or new Microsoft products; and of course, he gets me to watch them too. Hall perfected Gates's mannerisms and speech patterns so well that I wonder if he didn't spend time with him, or many, many hours studying footage to play the part.

"Sorry, my response was not directed to you. I don't need to clarify my feelings about guns or gun owners."

You are correct you do not.

"All of the "facts" you present will not change my mind about ever owning a gun."

Ok but the "facts" I've given are genuine facts, not "facts". Wow that is a lot of fact.

"My fears are not irrational to me, I have seen what guns do in the wrong hands. I don't know you at all, nothing you say would make me feel safe if I were to be in a room with you and a loaded gun, I don't care how many training classes you have been to."

I don't want to minimize your feelings or demean in anyway so please don't take it that way. But that is an irrational feer. Better put...there is no Rational reason to fear me or the gun simply because you are in a room with one.

"To me owning a gun is just one more thing to have to worry about, it's just not worth it to me but then again I'm not running high on testosterone."

Well I'm not sure about the testosterone part but believe me owning a gun is a huge responsibility and I completely understand not wanting the additional "worries" of owning one.

"Speaking of 'falling silent'...

...My response to the 'gun ownership reduces burglaries' comment..."

Touché

:)

How about I respond to it then....

"People in 'fine neighborhoods' around here have security systems and burglar alarms. In our area (about 2-3 square miles of in-city single-family residential), we have on average about 3 burglaries per QUARTER. Why? Not because of gun ownership...because so many have alarms. In fact, we have more 'car prowls' than any other crime (due to many having nice cars...not us...but others in our area! LOL!)."

The possibility of owning a gun is a deterrent to a criminal. An alarm and security systems are the exact same thing. But my original statement said that the possibility of gun ownership can lower crime rates. Let me reword it with the inverse.

Removing the possibility of gun ownership will likely lead to a rise in crime.

See Britain.

It is similar to me saying if you remove all your alarms, etc crime will also likely rise.

The more deterrents that are removed the more free a criminal feels to act..
