President Bush appeared before before the National Urban League in Detroit, Michigan, Friday to bolster his standing among African-American voters.
The president touted his administration's achievements over the last three years, including the No Child Left Behind Act, more funding for historically African-American colleges and universities and more support for small businesses.
He also announced a public-private partnership with the Urban League to create more minority entrepreneurs.
President Bush was criticized for rejecting an invitation to appear at last week's NAACP, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People's annual convention. The group's leadership has been harshly critical of President Bush since he took office.
President Bush lost the African American vote in 2000 to former Vice President Al Gore by a margin of 9-1. A recent poll showed the president trailing Democratic challenger John Kerry among African Americans by an 8-1 margin.
