"Then crack down on the employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens. "
I agree.
"I wonder how many illegal aliens would risk coming here if they knew that they wouldn't be able to get a job? "
I wonder how many would risk the attempt if they knew there was border patrols waiting to stop them. Even if they figured they had nothing to loose, I wonder how many would actually make it here if we had a good border control system set up. Obviously a broken down fence and a river aren't doing the job right now.

Not all illegal immigrants come through our southern border...and that border alone would take more money & manpower than we can even begin to afford to patrol and 'secure'.
"Not all illegal immigrants come through our southern border"
You are right. Only 4.8 of the 7 million illegal immigrants were from Mexico (figures for 2000)....I will repost something I'd posted earlier, so that you may read further:
Mexico is the largest source country for unauthorized immigration to the United States. The estimated unauthorized resident population from Mexico increased from about 2.0 million in 1990 to 4.8 million in January 2000. Mexico’s share of the total unauthorized resident population increased from 58 percent in 1990 to 69 percent in 2000. In addition to Mexico, six countries had more than 100,000 unauthorized residents in the United States in January 2000 --El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, Honduras, China, and Ecuador."
"Can you imagine trying to 'secure' our northern border? It would be impossible."
I can't imagine too many Canadians trying to sneek into the U.S.
"but to also see if we can help countries such as Mexico increase their standard of living so that those same people don't have to leave in order to have a better life."
How could we do that? A great deal of American citizens are already questioning U.S. involvement with reforming other countries' governments...
"Ummm...it's not the Canadians that are sneaking in...ROTFLMAO!"
I know, I was being sarcastic. :)
"I understand that. But, does that mean we will only make a true effort to stop illegal immigrants from just ONE country?"
That ONE country would dramaticly reduce the problem...it's just a place to start.
"You don't have to 'reform' their government. There are already programs in the works to help industry, etc., raise the standards."
NAFTA was intended to help in that respect. While the labor that goes south is still cheap in respect to American standards, the auto companies are paying people in Mexico far more than they were paid before. And the democrats HATE NAFTA because the Mexicans are *stealing* jobs away from Americans...either way it turns out being a mess in the eyes of one group or another.
I do want to say that I enjoy going 'round with you on issues. You make me think. :)
"Now...back to the southern border...do you really think that it is not only financially feasible but also physically logistical to secure the border? Fences alone won't stop anyone who is determined..."
I would *like* to see military patrols set up along the border, once we're out of Iraq, Afghanistan and Cuba. And I'm not saying that people caught crossing the border should be shot or anything...just escorted back to their own soil....we could even offer them materials (in spanish of course) informing them on how to become a citizen.

I still don't see how we could fund (considering the huge amount of debt our country is already in) such a thing...let alone staff it.
I don't think it's about feeling threatened, but rather it makes a farce of the law. It also is totally unfair to those that follow immigration law, and come here legally. They must jump through hoops to get in (same here in Canada). And as was mentioned by someone else, the issue is that they then don't pay taxes so its unfair to all other citizens. Now maybe the solution is to make it easier to immigrate, and increase the quotas. But it still should be done legally.
