I have written may mesgs that refute this assertion. The following article disputes the assertion.

http://www.axisoflogic.com/artman/publish/article_11106.shtml

I am not posting the article, but a quote from Bertrand Russell, contained therein,

"I have always been told throughout my youth of the fanaticism of the Mohammedans, and especially that story of the destruction of the library at Alexandria. Well, I believed all these stories, but when I came to look into the history of the times concerned, I had a great many shocks. In the first place, I discovered that the library of Alexandria was destroyed a great many times, and the first time was by Julius Caesar. But the last time was supposed to have been by the Mohammedans, and for this I found no justification whatsoever. Nor did I find that the Mohammedans were fanatical. The contests between Catholics, Nestorians, and Monophysites were bitter and persecuting to the last degree. But the Mohammedans, when they conquered Christian countries, allowed the Christians to be perfectly free, provided they pay a tribute. The only penalty for being a Christian was that you had to pay a tribute that Mohammedans did not have to pay. This proved completely successful, and the immense majority of the population became Mohammedans, but not through any fanaticism on the part of the Mohammedans. On the contrary they, in the earlier centuries of their power, represented free thought and tolerance to a degree that the Christians did not emulate until quite recent times."

- Bertrand Russell (Eng. philosopher, mathematician, 1872-1970): "Reading History As It Is Never Written" p.293

".... in the Mohammedan world, Christians and Jews were not molested so long as they paid the tribute; but throughout Christendom death was the usual penalty for even the smallest deviation from orthodoxy."

- Bertrand Russell: In Praise of Idleness and Other Essays

<<"Forcing God's Hand: Why Millions Pray for a Quick Rapture and the Destruction of Planet Earth." >>

Thanks for the title, it does sound like a very interesting book.

Did you mean for this to be dismissive? It is not just the word "mission" it is several other words, for example "Crusade" or the "axis of evil". It is GWB's demeanor, it is the way GWB proclaims God appeard to him and selected him to govern this country. There are plenty of signs, all you need to do is pay attention; GWB is wrapped securely in the ideology of the religious-right. You are, of course, free to demean the concept, but do not demean those of us to happen to take it seriously, and that's exactly what your snide comment said to me.

What makes you think I haven't read the Bible? You obviously didn't read the posts in the ivillage link because in one, I said I had read Revealations. Now as to what I fear!

I do not for one moment believe the whole rapture thing. What I do believe is that Christian, Jewish and Muslim zealots pose a potential for an ever escallating war which will be interpreted by many as the "Clash of Civilizations." A replay of the Crusades, a very touchy word for Muslims, and one GWB used in ignorance. I can remembering reading an article that very suscintly presented this argument and concluded that "Washington will not have a clue as to what's happening". That's what I fear--a needless human-generated war that will cause much pain and devastation. Perhaps you should read the articles I posted.

I did read the op-ed pieces you posted, and I did dismiss them as inflammatory, bigoted paranoia, frankly. As an ordained elder and deacon of the Christian Church, I find the insinuation that because a president prays and believes in good and evil and trusts in a higher power, he must be a maniacal zealot bent on creating this Crash of Civilizations to be offensive.

If as you say, you read what's there and not what you want to read into it (post 7046.25), I would like to know where you read this?
