Interstate Bakeries / Twinkies / HostessInterstate Bakeries Corp. on Wednesday filed for bankruptcy after struggling

with more than $1.3 billion in debt and weak demand for bread products,

brought on by the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets.

The largest U.S. wholesale bakery and maker of Wonderbread also accepted the

resignation of James Elsesser as chairman and chief executive, according to the

Chapter 11 filing in the U.S.

Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Missouri in Kansas City.

The company has named Leo Benatar as non-executive chairman and Antonio Alvarez as chief executive, according to court papers. Alvarez is managing director of the turnaround firm Alvarez Marsal to assist the company in the restructuring process.

Say it ain't so! The Twinkies of my youth are endangered. I remember when my mom would buy them in twin packs for our lunches and for snacks. Has it been at least 50 years? Unfortunately, the older I get the richer Twinkies seem. I haven't had one for ages. Being as cheap, make that as economy minded as I am, I shall make it a point to stop at the day old Wonderbread store and purchase a pack.

Well, is it the low carb craze that drove them to bankruptcy or is it their failure to adapt to changing times?

I really feel bad about this...My BIL works for them and I don't remember the last time I bought twinkies or ding dongs, my youngest son is 9 and I don't know that he even knows what they are. My step son on the other hand would eat nothing else given the chance, that is why we don't buy them... we do buy wonder bread, though I guess just not enough...

There's always at least two POV. The workers that will be hurt if the bakery doesn't come out of chapter 11 versus the unhealthy product. Maybe they should make
