Despite boycott, clinic opening on target

AUSTIN, Texas -- Construction of a Planned Parenthood clinic is on schedule and nearly complete despite a two-month work stoppage last year organized by an abortion opponent.

The clinic, a 10,000-square-foot limestone building with a red tile roof, will open in November as planned, said Danielle Tierney, a spokeswoman for the reproductive services provider.

Planned Parenthood got workers back on the job after deciding to operate as its own general contractor. Spearheaded by Chris Danze, who also is a contractor, the construction boycott was a new tactic in the long-running debate over abortion.

"It felt like the whole nation was looking to Austin," Tierney said Thursday at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. "We were determined not to let the boycott succeed."

The boycott targeted suppliers of materials and workers - including plumbers and air conditioning and dry wall installers - and ground the project to a halt within six weeks.

Danze was among a handful of protestors at the ceremony, held in the building's parking lot.

"This will be the most evil place in Austin if it is completed," he said.

Danze said he has been contacted by anti-abortion groups across the country seeking advice on how to conduct similar boycotts. He said one is being waged against a Planned Parenthood clinic project in Houston.

One of the 200 Planned Parenthood supporters at the ribbon-cutting was Sarah Weddington, who argued Roe v. Wade before the Supreme Court. The landmark case legalized abortion.

"This building is a national symbol," Weddington said. "Women ought to have a choice."

I remember the story about the protest against this being built. The anti-choice 'people' were calling on builders etc. not build & suppliers not to supply.

Glad to see common sense reigned.

Yes!!!!!!! wat to go !!!! thank goodness women can get affordable health care!!! do people not relize that women go there for healthcare too? not just for advise on abortion? without these healtcare facilities over one million women would be with out healcare, this includes mamograms, gyn visits, shots for tots, and treatment for colds and flu, so women do not have to clog up the ER, with things like the flu, or there child with an ear infection!!! Thank goodness for planned parent hood.

I think PP is wonderful. I am friends with a woman who got her very-discounted birth control pills from them for 10 years (I think they also distribute free condoms, am i right?) and just last year had a healthy baby girl- PLANNED. They were married for 8 years and finally had enough money to get out of the 6th floor walkup studio apartment they were living in, and now they feel like they can save & take care of her now. So they started their family and couldn't be happier. I believe that as long as we can send Bush & the Neoconservatives packing, this country will continue evolving, instead of sliding backward in time. There are many of us who believe this, but we all have to be active participants and VOTE in november!

Okay as long as I'm on that tangent...
