Fiat is about to purchase 35% of Chrysler, with an option to purchase up to 55%. This may mean our government bailed out an Italian auto maker.

Story - http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123238519459294991.html

Italy's Fiat SpA is poised to take a 35% stake in U.S. car maker Chrysler LLC, people familiar with the matter said, in a move aimed at helping both firms weather an economic downturn threatening the survival of some of the auto industry's biggest companies.

Under terms of the deal, Fiat is likely to take a 35% stake by midyear and have the option of taking as much as 55% of the company over time, these people said. Cerberus Capital Management LP, Chrysler's owner, is looking to retain an interest in the U.S. car maker, these people said, adding that it is unclear whether Daimler AG will want to keep its entire 19.9% stake.

Could we use higher vehicle fatality rates which will come with the smaller Fiat's?

There we go with the "big American cars are safer" argument.
My present vehicle is a Mitsubishi crossover prior to owning it I've driven a Toyota Corolla & Tercel. Guess what I'm still alive! Think about 56 MPG & drive safely.

We are slowly getting bought by foreign countries. We owe so much now that I would not be surprised if we start paying our mortgages to foreigners soon.

Hopefully with this new President, Americans will be working more, building our new greener power sources and infrastructure. Which in turn will make it possible for companies to earn more and depend less on other countries.

I think having smaller cars is not a safety issue, most Americans are going to have to start driving smaller cars, whether they like it or not. We are headed toward a Greener future. Yes there will still be trucks around, but mostly for those that actually use them for what they were made for; work, not for looks.

To be honest, I don't know what Fiat will do that Mercedes Benz couldn't...

Unions work great when labor is being exploited.

Unfortunately greed seems to be a part of our human condition.

Greed by employers who exploit workers, or later by unions which exploit business.

Between greedy management and greedy workers, many industries fail.
