A Texas mother is so opposed to guns that she objects to her child being taught the basics of gun safety (1. Don't touch it. 2) Stop what you're doing. 3) Call an adult).

Samone Howe of Garland brought home what appeared to be a typical coloring book; until her mom decided to page through it.
"Not only do I think it's inappropriate to provide this information to my 5-year-old, but this is a program published by the NRA," said Nicola Howe, Samone's mother.
The coloring book includes illustrations of handguns and rifles.
"Having pictures of guns that children color in I think is sending the wrong message," said Howe.
The book is called Gun Safety with Eddie Eagle and it's published by the NRA. It's part of the Garland Independent School District's Health and Safety Curriculum.
"If a student comes across a weapon, they're supposed to stop, don't touch the weapon and then run away and tell an adult. Those are the parts that are taught," said Reavis Wortham with Garland I.S.D.
Howe doesn't see it as deterrent. She believes it only encourages curiosity.
"At 5 years old, anytime you tell a child not to touch something, that's exactly what they do. It's in their nature to be curious and to touch and handle things," said Howe.
Samone attends kindergarten at Sewell Elementary School. Not only did she get a coloring book, but her class also watched a video featuring Eddie Eagle.
"Gun ownership, control and safety are hot topics as well. It just simply has no place in our school systems," said Howe.
The district stresses that gun safety is only one part of the curriculum. Teachers also spend days even weeks talking about life jackets, bicycle safety, car safety and what to do if confronted by a stranger.
Garland school officials say the safety curriculum is 10 years old and this is the first complaint the district has received since it began.

It's hard for me to imagine that this was going on for 10 yrs. and that this mother was the first one to complain! Kids coloring guns makes guns for kids, just look like pretty things! I would never let a child of mine have a coloring book composed of deadly weapons. I thought television was was the only medium teaching kids that violence was OK. I know now that some coloring books need to be looked at twice before purchasing one for a child.
Thanks for making it crystal clear that you haven't acually seen the coloring books in question. You sound like the people who insist that comprehensive sex education will glamorize sex and make kids promiscuous.
BTW - the video link in the original post shows pages from the coloring book and the Eddie Eagle comic strip. If you take a look at the book, you might do a better job of assessing just what it might teach.

Um, it was an analogy?
Only in America???
I don't know whether to cry or laugh. Does a simple question become muddy just because it's about weapons?
Should we be handing out colouring books with syringes and needles so children can learn that they are dangerous? What abour colouring books of cigarettes? I'm sure a good number of cigarette companies would be willing to send out millions of colouring pictures of people blowing smoke up someone's &&.
Get serious. Not everyone is comfortable making guns a colouring object no matter how many reasons can be given. That it seems to be taken as an obvious point that many guns are lying around for young children to pick up and play with is a discussion for another day.

Apparently.

In point of fact there are anti-drug and anti-smoking coloring books used in many schools.
