Considering millions of people go skiing, frequently, and about 40 die each year, it's not hugely dangerous compared to other things out there. As I've told my children, the safest thing to do is sit on the couch but who wants to do that?

Forty-three percent of U.S. skiers and boarders wear helmets, up from 25 percent in the 2002-2003 season. Helmets are worn by 70 percent of children younger than 9, but 32 percent of people ages 18 to 24.

Twenty-six percent of beginners wear helmets, compared with 55 percent of advanced skiers and riders, according to the association's statistics."<

When my DD took skiing & snowboarding lessons in middle school, they required helmets.

"I'm surprised that they aren't required like bike helmets."

Me too.

I've never tried any Winter sports. (As you know I did some driveway skating with bad results.)

Actually wearing bike helmets can be worst for you in skiing and ice skating than no helmets. They're designed to take impact mostly from the front (flipping over the bike motion) and not behind and when you slide, you tend to flip onto your back or sides. If you look at some bike helmets, they stick way out in the back to a point (for aerodynamics) which could cause more damage in ski/skating accidents. I've seen many children on the slopes and at rinks

Yeah, I didn't mean to say 'bike helmets'.
