Gunman at North Carolina nursing home kills eight

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (Reuters) - A gunman opened fire inside a nursing home in a small North Carolina town on Sunday, killing eight people, including elderly patients in wheelchairs, local authorities said.

A 45-year-old local man was arrested and faced eight counts of first-degree murder after the shooting at the retirement care home in Carthage, about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh.

"There are eight dead," Moore County District Attorney Maureen Krueger told a news conference. Neither she nor other officials were able to immediately offer a motive for the killings in what was the third major shooting incident in the southeastern United States this month.

Those killed at the Pinelake Health and Rehab Center in Carthage, which offered care for the elderly and Alzheimer's sufferers, included seven patients in their 70s, 80s and 90s, and one 39-year-old staff member, officials said.

"The shooter entered the facility heavily armed and began shooting at people in wheelchairs," WRAL News quoted North Carolina state Senator Harris Blake as saying.

Wow. That's a lot of innuendo and sensationalism.

No. The points made are neither sensational nor based on innuendo. It is far more questionable, and thus unreasonably sensational, to compare a plastic bag to firearms.

I leave it to the news to report what has been a significant number of shootings--children, nursing home patients, immigrants learning English.... In today's paper alone were accounts of two more shootings in addition to earlier ones: The gunman who shot three police officers in Pittsburg; and a man who shot his Army soldier wife in the PX at Ft. Bliss. Do you dare call those headlines "sensational"?

The NRA has failed to make a logical and reasonable case for anybody but its members and its lobbyists. Politicians still want to get the maximum number of votes so they kowtow to those lobbyists. Their failure to act courageously is costing lives but that's nothing new.

However, I won't stop pointing out the lack of logic and sound basis for those who demand unfettered, unchecked and damn deadly RKBA.

Okay, okay, ya can't keep on talking firearms and expect my world-renowned restraint to hold up forever.

Since I got dragged here for another post, thought I would go ahead and comment here as well.

First comment about this...

We do NOT live in the days of the Wild West when "justice" was a matter of individual perception and people shot "each other for legal reasons".

While true that

Could you possibly point out ANYONE who has argued for an unfettered (read unrestricted, unlimited)

There was no need for me to take anything out of context.
