WTC Facade Glass Will Be Made in Red China

http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/04/wtc_facade_glas.php

At least part of 1 World Trade Center -- formerly known as the Freedom Tower -- will be made by our friends in Communist China. According to the Sentinel, PPG of Pittsburgh was hoping to make facade glass for the new tower. But Solera Construction/DCM Erectors of New York instead gave the sub-contract for the glass to the China Beijing company (or cadre or whatever they call it), using PPG's licensed technology. A PPG spokesman said he was "shocked this would be awarded to a company outside of the United States"; the Port Authority's spokesman shrugged, "We accepted the lowest responsible bidder."

On the bright side, by the time this communist Trade Center is built, we'll all be dead, either of a terrorist attack or old age. Weep, eagle, weep!

PPG loses bid for World Trade Center

A local manufacturing plant won’t have its glass on the new One World Trade Center building after all.

Instead, the glass will be manufactured in China.

PPG Industries, based in Pittsburgh, had submitted a bid to be a subcontractor to produce some of the facade glass for the main building of the new complex in Lower Manhattan, previously dubbed the Freedom Tower..

“We did bid on providing some highly aesthetic glass for the first 20 floors for the facade section of the tower,” said PPG spokesman Jack Maurer.

But the contractor PPG hoped to work with failed to win the contract with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Instead, the contract was awarded to Solera Construction/DCM Erectors of New York.

“We accepted the lowest responsible bidder,” explained Steve Coleman, spokesman for the Port Authority.

However, Solera/DCM hired a subcontractor, Zetian Systems of Las Vegas, which in turn hired China Beijing Glass to produce the patented glass, which it will produce under the PPG license.

“They’re licensed to use our technology,” Maurer said.

He said the “Starphire” glass is patented and Beijing Glass is a licensee of the PPG technology.

The chart clearly shows once Republicans controlled Congress in 1994, the budget situation improved. Prior to that time, when Clinton and Democrats ran the executive and congress, the deficit continued to get worse. Even under the Clinton presidency.

Only Republicans running Congress can get our budget in balance. :)

I seriously don't understand all the brou ha ha. Isn't this what "American" military contractors are doing in Iraq and Afganistan, that is running the cost of these wars up? They get the contract, and then outsource it to the lowest bidder, often a company from China, India, or elsewhere. They aren't actually employing Americans to do the work, they are just running the major dollars through the top eschelons of American firms.

It's the symbolism of the project. All the heart holding, saluting the flag & patriotism Americans exhibit yet it okay to outsource this artwork. I guess I don't understand those that think it's more important to save a buck.

But couldn't this very same thing be said in regard to supporting our troops? Yet, often the, suppliers of their food and housing, though technically "American" companies, were outsourced to foreign companies. I'm not sure if the

Yes, I agree.

Yes, I re-read the link....Also I noted that the big problem here is how the contracting/sub-contracting/sub-sub-contracting/sub-sub-SUB contracting process is being conducted. China was brought in as a link way down in a chain of contracts. Why so many middle men I wonder?

To me, this is first and foremost a problem with how business actually gets conducted. I don't see it as a political/partisan issue. However, it certainly adds a lot of convoluted red tape, results in the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, and certainly spreads any accountability around pretty darned thinly. This to me seems very dangerous....and the fact that a part of the contract went to a country outside of the United States and ruined the chance for a patriotic show of solidarity is probably the LEAST of the potential concerns here.
