Op-ed: Teabag protesters should ask: Am I being duped by Fox News?

In reading and viewing the pictures of these ‘Tea bag’ protests thanks to MediaMatters.org, they cite, "Fox News is associating itself in advance with whatever rhetoric emanates at the upcoming events." And they would be correct.

As a writer, by witnessing these protests spirited on by Fox News, they have lost their right to call themselves journalists.  True journalism is covering an issue and not being the instigator or where one associates itself with any protest against the government.

In journalism, one covers the story and DOES NOT become the story.  A journalist does not interject themselves into the mix period.

Glenn Beck with his ‘9/12’ movement has ceased to be an on-air journalist (not that I ever believed he had the right to call himself that), but is a one man PAC.

In as much as on-air journalists from MSNBC have railed against former President Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney, you did not see Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow for that matter organizing protests against the former administration.  They cited their opinions during the previous administration and that was all.  If any viewer based upon what they opined wished to organize a protest, it was done independently and that is the way it should be.

They both have at times disagreed with President Barack Obama, but you do not see them saying to their viewers “Take to the streets”  The both of them realize their words have power and never should they cross the line where violence can occur.

When one sees these protests on television or covered via the Internet, those who take part in them (if they are of sound mind) should ask: Is this anger at the government truly coming from me or am I being used by a large corporation such as Fox News?  Basically, am I being duped?

Fox News has been known to be the mouth piece for the Republican Party and the conservative movement and with the election of President Barack Obama has done everything in their power to undermine his presidency.  Even the NY Post which is also owned by Rupert Murdoch ran that cartoon of an ape being shot, which could have led some nut-job to assassinate our president.  While they issued an apology, still the damage was done.  You cannot un-ring that bell.

According to MediaMatters.org, "Several Fox News hosts will be broadcasting their shows from the protests and have encouraged viewers to attend them. For example, Glenn Beck has implored his viewers: "If you can't make the one in San Antonio, please go to the one with Neil or with Sean in Atlanta, that's supposed to be great, Greta is in Washington, D.C. Just get out and let your face be seen."

Again, this is a clear example proving that Fox News is no longer a news outlet, but an organization rallying their viewers to confront the government.  Should they have their FCC license pulled? If they are inciting those to riot against their government where innocent people can be hurt, I would say so.

Fox News always cites itself as being patriotic in support of our troops, yet they fail to understand that our tax money is used to support them through body armor and the medical benefits they so rightly deserve.  At least then Senator Barack Obama voted for the G.I. Bill where now Senator John McCain did not.

There's a huge difference between covering a story and blatantly promoting a story.

" I think to fault Fox News for covering a story is a bit silly."

How about faulting them for taking a non-event created by a fringe, radical right-wing element and giving it free advertising under the guise of covering a story that's not a story, enabling the extremist fringe to maximize something that should have been covered as much as the UFO convention in Roswell, NM?

This was a Faux Noise promotional program disguised as news.

GE had a green week a while ago, where everyone was ordered to cover green stories.

Where was the outrage against made up stories?

GE wants to profit from selling windmills and new electrical infrastructure. The green stories were for the parent to push an agenda for our government to subsidize very high cost, non-economically justifiable, "green" energy products.

I don't recall media matters being very concerned about GE using NBC and MSNBC to gin up business.

I guess creating green stories is OK, covering protesting citizens who aren't liberals isn't. :)

The fallacy is presenting this as if it were an 'either/or' situation. It is not. Neither are 'news'. Michelle Obama's arms and the dog are entertainment. The Tea Party is a 'journalistic (and I use the term loosely) manipulation.

I don't mind the tea party coverage any more than the G20 protest coverage. The argument by liberals seems to be that covering a story somehow creates it. The sub-argument seems to be that only liberal approved created stories are acceptable journalistic practice.

Fox PROMOTED the tea party 'protest'. Point being it was not journalism's finest day by any stretch of the imagination.

I've seen many a protest "covered" on the news in my time. I have NEVER seen it done the way they "covered" it on FOX. For example, I've never seen a multi-million dollar news network "urge" people to go....Or say, "Come celebrate with us" or "Come down, it will be fun" or brand it with their network's own acronym (FNC Tea Parties)....or have well-known news personalities and journalists from the Network "sponsor" any events....Nor have seen their websites facilitate going to any protest that has been on the news the way the FOX website has done it sooooo conveniently. I've already posted some links where you can go and select a Tea Party postcard with a photo of your favourite FOX News celebrity on it to "send to all your friends".

Below is just a tiny sampling of the type of links that FOX NEWS thoughtfully provided to it's viewers as part of its "coverage" this so called "grassroots" protest.

FOX News will have all the details leading right up to April 15 tax day -- from links to tea parties in you area to live reports from the scenes, analyses from the FOX Forum and FOXNews.com's own series on the tea party phenomenon.
