United gets strict on ‘seatmates of size’
Policy requires large passengers to purchase extra ticket or stay behind
Effective today, United Airlines has a new official policy that affects “seatmates of size†and those passengers seated near them.
The airline’s posted policy states that if a passenger cannot fit into a single seat, buckle their seatbelt with an additional seatbelt extension, or put the seat’s armrest down, the airline will ask that passenger to pay for an extra seat or stay behind.
Spokesperson Robin Urbanski Janikowski said the airline will first attempt to take measures to avoid the extra charge. “If there is another seat on the airplane that is next to an empty seat, we will re-accommodate our guest in that seat and there is no charge,†she wrote in an e-mail message.

That's fine with me as long as they keep the seats from RECLINING.
This just illustrates that airlines have packed the seats too tightly.

"the alloted space between seats is too small."
When I fly I feel like a canned sardine. I'm not that comfortable being so close to people I don't know. My DH
"Maybe airlines should have seat sizes in S, M, L, and extra long."
Hey that's a good idea. When my DH flies on business he upgrades whenever possible. Oh for the good old days when it was a treat to fly.
"Even better, they could have children seats so they could be contained away from adults who want quiet"
LOL I know your kidding. One time we flew to Orlando & back & I'd wished the children, or me, had been in a soundproof area. It was hell! On the way back my assigned seat had a large wet patch on it. I refused to sit on it.
Unfortunately that project is on hold - or maybe it is fortunate that we have to wait, give things a chance to calm down in Mexico.
I am also short, so I know what you mean.
