Should craigslist be blamed?

The killing of a young woman in Boston and the recent arrest of Phillip Markoff has drawn attention to the website craigslist.com, generating discussion about whether the site is facilitating serious crime. (ABC Nightline is interviewing the owner Craig Nwemark tonight.)
It’s wrong to try to blame this on craigslist. I’ve used the site several times to buy/sell furniture, household services, etc. and I’ve had very positive experiences. However, I use common sense – I get references, do background checks, and use my intuition. We all have to be careful – even when buying a chair or whatever. I didn’t even know about the erotic ads until a friend told me about a year ago – he said he and his wife read them for laughs. I looked and several were obvious sleaze, complete with pictures.
People who engage in hooking up with people via the internet take a tremendous risk. I’m sorry about what happened to the women, but they made some foolish, dangerous choices. But it could just as well have been match.com or eharmony or even some of those places that advertise late night to call a number and listen to dirty talk. If a women meets a guy at Starbucks or McDonalds, invites him to a hotel room or her apt, and gets raped/killed does that mean Starbucks or McDonalds should close? Nope.

"However, I use common sense – I get references, do background checks, and use my intuition."
Exactly! Many don't have common sense or/& lack intuition.

As investigators searched for the Craigslist killer in Boston April 16, Philip Markoff was an hour south of the city in Warwick, R.I, where he left his fingerprint at the scene of another attack in a hotel, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.
The Boston University medical student has also been traced to the crime scene by text messages sent from the area by a hand-held device moments after the attempted holdup of a prostitute at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.
The official did not know who received the messages, but said investigators were able to pinpoint the location of the device used to send them by analyzing the traffic on local cellphone towers.
"He definitely sent text messages literally within moments of the attack," said the official.
The fingerprint and computer evidence, combined with grainy black- and-white pictures of the alleged assailant captured by hotel security cameras, make it all but certain that Markoff will be charged soon by Rhode Island authorities in the attempted robbery of the 26-year-old prostitute, said the official.
Markoff, 23, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of murder, kidnapping, and armed robbery in connection with separate attacks against two women at two Back Bay hotels. His lawyer, John Salsberg of Boston, did not return phone calls seeking comment about the evidence in Rhode Island.

Welcome to In the News.
No, craigslist shouldn't be held responsible for someone else's actions.
Craigslist is not to blame. The people who use Craigslist are adults and need to learn common sense and take responsibility for their choices. Its not Craigslist duty to hold your hand and make sure you are okay when conducting transactions with others you meet on their site.
I feel the same way about online dating services. Some women blame the dating service when they get date raped by someone they met on that site. Sorry, but its not the site's fault.
Just an update.
