What does religion have to do with it? I don't think the fact this woman's father was a minister had anything to do with her raping and killing this child

Huckaby Child Murder & Rape: Does religion cause insanity?
Melissa Huckaby, a 28 year-old mother, has been convicted of the murder and rape of 8 year-old Sandra Cantu. After Cantu disappeared, they found Sandra in a suitcase in a pond in Tracy, California.... Melissa Huckaby, a 28 year-old mother, has been convicted of the murder and rape of 8 year-old Sandra Cantu. After Cantu disappeared, they found Sandra in a suitcase in a pond in Tracy, California. The strangest part is that a mother killing a child is a "statistical anomaly." Also, when Huckaby's family was asked to describe the kind of person Melissa was, they said she was a loving mother who had a very strong religious background. So if this loving, religious mother killed and raped an 8 year old girl, what made her do it? Was it her "strong religious background"?

Religion had nothing to do with it. All kinds of criminals commit heinous acts. This woman just camouflaged herself well and fooled a lot of people until the proof became conclusive. Criminals and psychopaths fool people every day. Some use religion as a cloak or justification to harm others. Some don't. In this case, religion didn't contribute to her capacity or decision to do his heinous act, IMO. Religion is a non-issue in this case.

I couldn't imagine that growing up in a religious household would make someone this horrible.

Right after I posted, I thought of Carrie, lol!

So maybe in some insanely overzealous religious households, a kid could grow up to do horrific things!

Well, if you are referring to Stephen King's Carrie, that was just fiction. But there might have been a kernel of truth in that fictional story. Writers often draw upon personal experiences and real life observations to create their stories.

I think some are trying to parallel Melissa Huckaby with Andrea Yates, who was a religious fanatic. But this is totally different. Huckaby (allegedly) sexually assaulted a child and then murdered her, which makes it worse. (I say "allegedly" because until her trial, we don't know 100% if she really committed this crime - she is of course, innocent until proven guilty). In fact, I think Huckaby would be an even worse monster than Scott Peterson was, and he got the death penalty. But I don't see Huckaby getting this. I think if proven guilty, she will be sent to a mental hospital or get life in prison with possibility of parole. The fact she is a woman will mean she gets a lighter sentence. Unfair, but that's our legal system, and society tends to think women like her must be insane to do what they do.

Stephen King is one of my favorite authors!

I don't think Huckaby's case for insanity is the same as Andrea's.

I recently read that its believed Huckaby did not act alone in her crimes. She possibly was drugging these children and taking pictures of them for underground porn rings. Its also possible that her victim's death was an "accident" (even though she is responsible for it, of course).

I didn't know about that. Interesting. She has been put away for life though, don't think she'll ever get out.

Then imo, no insanity there.

Yes, pure evil if she was doing this for money. Not insanity at all.
