Abortion doc George Tiller gunned down at church

By ROXANA HEGEMAN

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - Late-term abortion doctor George Tiller, a prominent advocate for abortion rights wounded by a protester more than a decade ago, was shot and killed Sunday at a church in Wichita where he was serving as an usher and his wife was in the choir, his attorney said.

Tiller was shot during morning services at Reformation Lutheran Church, attorney Dan Monnat said. Police said a manhunt was under way for the shooter, who fled in a car registered to a Kansas City suburb nearly 200 miles away.

National anti-abortion groups had long focused on Tiller, whose Women's Health Care Services clinic is one of just three in the nation where abortions are performed after the 21st week of pregnancy.

In 1991, the Summer of Mercy protests organized by Operation Rescue drew thousands of anti-abortion activists to this city for demonstrations marked by civil disobedience and mass arrests.

Some abortion opponents had resorted to attacks against Tiller long before Sunday's shooting. A protester shot Tiller in both arms in 1993, and his clinic was bombed in 1985.

Anti-abortion group Operation Rescue issued a statement denouncing the shooting.

"We are shocked at this morning's disturbing news that Mr. Tiller was gunned down," said Troy Newman, Operation Rescue's president. "Operation Rescue has worked for years through peaceful, legal means, and through the proper channels to see him brought to justice. We denounce vigilantism and the cowardly act that took place this morning."

Capt. Brent Allred said Wichita police were looking for a gunman who fled in a 1993 light blue Ford Taurus registered in the Kansas City suburb of Merriam, Kan. No other details about the shooting were immediately released.

The phone line at the home of Tiller and wife, Jeanne, had a busy signal Sunday.

Tiller began providing abortion services in 1973. He acknowledged abortion was as socially divisive as slavery or prohibition but said the issue was about giving women a choice when dealing with technology that can diagnose severe fetal abnormalities before a baby is born.

"Pre-natal testing without pre-natal choices is medical fraud," Tiller once said.

After the 1991 protests, Tiller kept mostly to his heavily guarded clinic, although in 1997 he opened it to three tours by state lawmakers and the media.

Tiller remained prominent in the news, in part because of an investigation started begun by former Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, an abortion opponent.

Prosecutors had alleged that Tiller had gotten second opinions from a doctor who was essentially an employee of his, not independent as state law requires. A jury in March acquitted Tiller of all 19 misdemeanor counts.

"I am stunned by this lawless and violent act, which must be condemned and should be met with the full force of law," Kline said in a written statement. "We join in lifting prayer that God's grace and presence rest with Dr. Tiller's family and friends."

Abortion opponents also questioned then-Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' ties to Tiller before the Senate confirmed her this year as U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary. Tiller donated thousands of dollars to Sebelius over the years.

The child may have been wanted at one time. Upon finding out it was terminally ill, it became unwanted. Mr Tiller was commissioned to kill it so it wouldn't die later.

Exactly! The child was not going to be able to live. The Mother's imbilicle cord was it's lifeline. It's like a person on life support. I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would think this woman should have carried the baby to term or until she went into labor. How does one know that the Dr. in this case didn't induce labor.

The fetus had no brain, no spinal cord & part of the cranium was missing.

National Outrage: Wichita Abortion Clinic Now Closed

Far be it from me to judge the decision by George Tiller's family today to "permanently close" his late abortion services clinic in Wichita, Kansas in light of the horrifying murder of their loved one.

In a statement released today, the Tiller family says, "We are proud of the service and courage shown by our husband and father and know that women's health care needs have been met because of his dedication and service." A consequence of closing the clinic is that Dr. Tiller's colleague, LeRoy Cathart, who intended to stay on and continue providing care to women, will no longer have the opportunity to do so.

Far be it from me, or anyone, to sit in judgment of the actions of Dr. Tiller's family unless we have walked in their shoes, unless we have witnessed the barbaric gunning down of a loved one, and even then, it is their call, and their call alone.

But, given that there are only a handful of other late abortion practitioners, in the country, some of whom, like Dr. Tiller, daily risk infamy, injury, and worse to dedicate themselves to protecting the lives of women, one can't help but wonder what signal permanently closing Tiller's clinic sends to those who would like to put a permanent end to choice. In the words of a Boulder late abortion provider, "this is what they want. They've been wanting this for 35 years." And, today, the Tiller family have given choice opponents what they've wanted.

For more than 20 years, George Tiller, and his clinic, have been the target of choice opponents. This was not the first time the Kansas physician was the victim of a barbaric, and heinous, act of violence, but it was the last time.

Today, too, it is fair to say that Dr. Tiller is not longer alone. Today, we're all victims as fear has triumphed and we, as a society, have taken one huge step back to the days when a mother can, once again, be allowed to die in childbirth. Only a hundred years ago, we didn't have the science to prevent the tragic loss of the mother's life; now we do. Only now, there are some who would like to take us back to the same mindset that makes procreation a woman's primary raison d'etre. So, indeed, when Scott Roeder took George Tiller's life, not only did he commit first degree murder, it was a hate crime against women.

By closing the Wichita clinic, women will be denied access to a medically-necessary procedure, and one intended to save their lives, a message that fear is the most powerful weapon of all.

Far be it from me to judge, but somehow I can't help but think this is not what George Tiller would have wanted. He would want to know that courage didn't die with him in that Kansas church, and that those who care about the lives of women won't be bullied into submitting to the tyranny of those who claim to be protecting the life of the unborn often at the expense of the living.

What gets me is the assumptions that all these woman just had the late term abortion because it was an inconvenience! Sheesh! Why don't these people so totally against any abortion offer to PAY the woman to carry the baby to term, pay for her delivery, then adopt the child!!! I mean every one of them, or just mind their own business.

Nothing prevents another abortionist from obtaining the building and continuing to kill preborn children to prevent them from dying.

One anti-abortion group has expressed interest ....

Abortion foes interested in buying Kansas clinic
The Associated Press
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 06.10.2009

TOPEKA, Kan. — The leader of an anti-abortion group says the organization is interested in buying the now-closed clinic of slain abortion provider George Tiller.
Tiller’s family announced Tuesday that his clinic in Wichita, Kansas, was shutting down permanently. The doctor was fatally shot on May 31.
Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said he would love to make an offer for the property and that his group had discussed the idea.
Newman’s group bought another former abortion clinic in Wichita in 2006 for its headquarters. Newman said Operation Rescue could use more space.
Asked about Newman’s comments, Tiller attorney Dan Monnat called them an “irreverent publicity stunt.”
