ABC News' Kate Barrett Reports: Sarah Palin announced Friday that she will step down from her post as Alaska governor at the end of the month, and will not run for reelection.

In a press conference from her Wasilla home, the Alaska governor said “this decision has been in the works for awhile,” and said, “I’m not wired to operate under the same old politics as usual.”

There’s been speculation that Palin has had her eye on the 2012 presidential race, but it’s unclear why she’s leaving before the end of her term. Her current run as governor ends in 2010.

Part of a vast left-wing conspiracy to drive Palin out of office by way of ethics complaints?

"Karl Rove, the architect of former President George W. Bush's presidential win, said on "Fox News Sunday" that Ms. Palin's resignation gave ammunition to those who seek to take down elected officials. It "sort of sent a signal that if you do this sort of thing to a sitting governor, you're going to be able to drive them out of office."

What a load of bovine excrement. If Palin was pure as driven snow, she wouldn't need to worry about the cost of ethics claims because those costs could be borne by those who filed frivolous or wrongful claims; or her pack of adoring if brain-dead political contributors. She does have a PAC. http://www.sarahpac.com/ Instead, it looks very much like Palin in addition to being fumble-mouthed, is unscrupulous, short-tempered, and lacking in the gumption/stamina to weather any winds which don't blow her way. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

Apparently the McCain campaign felt similarly if Vanity Fair's most recent writeup is correct. http://www.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2009/08/sarah-palin200908
