It had to have been a rough 18 years for the family not knowing if he survived the downing and was taken prisoner (and might still be?), was taken prisoner and was killed later, or if he died when his aircraft went down.  Hopefully this will provide some peace for them.

It must be agonising not to know if a loved one is dead or held captive.

And on some levels it was even worse than that for them, as there had been reports that he had been seen alive in Iraqi custody some time back.
