This hasn't worked out in the past for other news' sites that have charged. I'm skeptical that it'll continue for too long. I will miss The Times..... Oh well.

Murdoch to charge for online news content

News Corp, which owns the London Times and Sun newspapers in Britain and the New York Post and The Wall Street Journal in the U.S., among many other papers, will soon begin charging for news content online, the BBC reports.

“We intend to charge for all our news websites," said chief executive Rupert Murdoch. "I believe that if we are successful, we will be followed by other media”.

To keep readers from simply shifting to free news websites, Murdoch said News Corp would simply make its content "better and differentiate it from other people," the BBC reports.

Murdoch said he was "satisfied" that the company could produce "significant revenues from the sale of digital delivery of newspaper content."

"Quality journalism is not cheap, and an industry that gives away its content is simply cannibalizing its ability to produce good reporting," he said, the BBC reports

Well, IMO, they can stick their "news content" where the sun doesn't shine, then. LOL! :D I already pay for a newsfeed included in my online ISP membership, and I read that mostly, anyway. I don't have a choice paying for that. Just like we don't if we have cable, satellite or even regular network channels. We either pay monthly fees or pay in all the commercials we must sit through. Nothing is "free" anywhere, any more. I see this move as just adding insult to injury and an unnecessary additional expense. Especially during a recession when we are cutting back on expenses, not adding new ones. (eye roll)

There are so many other quality news sites that I'd never pay to access any of Murdoch's.

I do like The Times but there are so many other news sites. I would never directly pay to get onto a site. The NY Times tried for awhile to pay for certain content but it only lasted about 6 mths.
