Ex-DHS chief links politics to terror alerts

Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge claims in a new book that he was pressured by other members of President George W. Bush's Cabinet to raise the nation's terror alert level just before the 2004 presidential election.

Ridge says he objected to raising the security level despite the urgings of former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, according to a publicity release from Ridge's publisher. He said the episode convinced him to follow through with his plans to leave the administration; he resigned on Nov. 30, 2004.

Doesn't surprise me at all.

Why would it? This is the lot which waged a "pre-emptive" war without provocation, eavesdropped on its own citizens without warrant, and basically eviscerated the idea of checks and balances with nonsense like "signing statements".

I wrote an e-mail in 2004 to friends and family. Told them if they voted for Bush, they'd get four more years of the same wretched policies. Oh well.

BushCo is "too big to fail" in terms of accountability. All we'll ever get in terms of justice is that judgment and punishment which history metes out.

Yet they voted the fool back in the second time around. Can't have much sympathy for people who are so easily misled.

Not at all surprised...I remember people discussing the 'reality' of terror alerts on this board & how many of us believed that they were just using those alerts to manipulate the American people.
