The U.S. Postal Service says it is offering a total of $450 million in buyouts to non-carrier employees willing to quit their jobs in a cost-saving move.

Amid a drop in mail volume, the postal service said up to 30,000 employees can take the $15,000 buyouts, which begin in October, The Washington Post reported. If successful, the buyouts would save up to $500 million in the next fiscal year, the Post said.

Letter carriers are not eligible, since the program only is targeting areas where it has excess employees. The buyout is being offered to postal retail clerks, distribution center mail handlers and clerks, and motor vehicle technicians.

Employees have until Sept. 25 to make a decision.

Eligible postal workers would get $10,000 in October and $5,000 in October of next year.

The Post said the buyouts apply to workers eligible for retirement, those eligible for an early retirement program that began last year, and any full-time, part-time regular or part-time flexible employees willing to resign.

The Post said the USPS has already cut more than 100 million work hours this year, which translates to 57,000 positions, and has a nationwide hiring freeze and salary freeze for top executives.
