SEATTLE - Police this weekend uncovered what they call a "secret camp" near North Seattle Community College while searching for evidence related to an overnight shooting spree.
Two suspected gunmen are in custody in connection with the Friday night shooting, which prompted a massive police callout and a two-hour closure of I-5.Watch the video.
Detectives and K-9 units searching a wooded area just between the college and the interstate found a site covered in camouflage netting that they believe is home to the two men.
The area contained bathroom and kitchen supplies, fireworks, cell phones, sleeping bags and piles of books, which included a martial arts manual, college computer science textbooks, a computer programming manual and even a book on how to pick up women.
It is the same area officers located an AK-47 rifle and ammunition the night before, after taking the two men into custody, police said.
Just after 9 p.m. Friday, someone fired several shots near the Northeast 92nd Street overpass, and then tracer rounds in the area of the college, according to investigators.
Tracer bullets are normally used by the military, and leave a light trail when fired. Responding officers tried to track down the men, and said at one point one suspected gunman ran across the closed freeway. Officers set up a perimeter around the area, and by midnight, took the men into custody without incident.
A judge has found enough evidence to hold one of the suspects, the man believed to have fired the rifle.
The state is asking for one count of the violation of the state firearm act. The man has a previous conviction for first-degree robbery, said prosecutors. Officials from North Seattle Community College also confirmed the man was enrolled in the college during the last winter quarter.
The second suspect is being held for obstructing a police investigation, although formal charges have yet to be filed.
Police have not released a motive yet, but says with new evidence from the secret camp and the suspects' statements, investigators should be able to unravel the mystery to how these men obtained the AK-47 and what they planned to do with it.
