Couple Sues Wal-Mart

I saw this on Good Morning America this morning. I think Wal-Mart should have their pants sued off of them! This is ridiculous. Think twice before taking any cute half nude pictures of your children and taking them some place to be developed. None of the pictures shown were child porn. Stupid Wal-Mart!

Not following you here. First you say that Wal-mart should have sued the pants of 'them'. Then you say "stupid Wal-Mart".

So are you FOR Wal-Mart (meaning you agree with what they did) or are you FOR the parents (meaning they did nothing wrong)?

OMIGOSH! Those poor parents! :O What a bunch of crap! :O Is Walmart so brain-dead that they think child pornographers are going to risk getting their photos developed just any old place?! Get real, Walmart! (eye roll) Walmart likes to project this holier than thou attitude by censoring what books they sell, or CDs or movies, but really they are just a cutthroat business that treats their employees abominably and sells cheap junk low quality stuff. Just another reason to not do business with this company, IMO.

I don't think it is Wal-Mart's fault. In most states, there are laws against taking any nude pictures of children--yes, it's extreme but it's to protect children and if that's the law, it's not Wal-Mart's fault for following it. Do we want the counterperson, who's probably making minimum wage and just wants a pay check, to sit back and determine what is and is not child porn? What's the determination, "I know it when I see it?" doesn't quite work and what if someone did have child porn but the counter person decided it wasn't? While I feel for the parents and there should be a better system in place for this, I think it's the system that needs to be changed, not Wal-Mart. I don't want Wal-Mart counter people being judge and jury and deciding a naked child is not porn. In the wrong hands, it could be.

I think the real victims here are the children. It is a traumatic experience

Anybody ever hear of digital cameras? These days, pornographers can even print out their own or upload from their camera to their own computers, then post online, or sell them online. Again, only a really, really stupid pornographer is going to have their film developed someplace like Walmart or a drug store or what have you. And I agree, some minimum wage undertrained clerk shouldn't be having that kind of judgment or policing type responsibility, in the first place. Heck, anybody could enforce any personal value or lack thereof, in the name of Walmart or any other photo service. And then the law considering the couple guilty *first* and tearing their lives apart with insufficient investigation?! The law enforcement people should be sued by the parents as well for false arrest, etc. Wrong, wrong, wrong! :O

Call me cynical but I've seen enough Datelines (and I don't even tune in to watch it) about child pornographers/pedophiles that I do believe some would be dumb enough to take their pictures to Wal Mart, or wherever to have their pictures developed. Stupid people commit stupid crimes but that doesn't mean we should pretend they don't exist. Of course there are ways around it and child pornography is, sadly, a booming business, because of it. But some people will stick to the good old fashioned pictures, for whatever reason. Just do a google search and you'll find crime reports for it.

I think Wal-Mart does have an obligation to pass on anything and not make the judgement themselves. I do think the system needs to be changed but the question is, given there is a possibility that parents might be perpetrators in any kind of abuse, would you rather treat all as innocent and possibly leave a child in a household that was abusive, or do the opposite extreme? I don't know how I feel about either. On one hand, when they've assumed innocence and the child has died (and that happened in my area recently with a couple of families), there is an uproar. On the other hand, when something like this happens, people also complain. Ideally, it could be handled much more quickly and less detrimentally than this. At the same time, these departments are understaffed and social workers are working overtime to get what they can done. It's a no-win situation.
