Cuban Peace Concert

Mon, 09-21-2009 - 10:47am

This last Sunday, history was made in Cuba. Famous Latin music performers from other countries gathered for this huge concert.
The 5 1/2-hour concert, had a crowd size of approximately 1.15 million — which would be one of every 10 Cubans. It was impossible to independently verify that number, but Juanes' visit to Cuba was clearly the biggest by an outsider since Pope John Paul II's 1998 tour.
Juanes is a Columbian singer who has done previous peace concerts in the past.

Do you think this will help speed up democracy in Cuba, or do you think it will empower the communist government there even more?

Performers from other Latin countries gathering in Cuba for a concert I think that's great. I can only see this as something positive & joyous

Some Cubans think that it will just help the Castro regime, but I believe like you, that it will help. I think this concert gave the Cuban citizens a taste of what freedom is all about.

I bet they're the ones living in Florida. :)

It's time the isolation of Cuba ended. The US trades with communist China & has diplomatic relations with Russian.

Yea, my father was one of those that believed we should keep the economic restrictions on them. We all came to Florida when Kennedy was President, a long time ago... I moved out of Florida for over 20 years, but now am back home.

There is a book that came out last year called, Dateline Havana. It talks about many aspects of Cuba's situation. Some of the author's opinions (too leftist for me), I didn't agree with but it was a very interesting read.

Many living in the US, not only Cubans, are stuck in the political climate of the later part of the 50's & early 60's.

I well

Thanks.

I just finished listening to the entire interview very interesting. My brother, in the UK, has friends that have vacationed in Cuba & they compare the standard of living to Britain a few years after WW2. The interview appeared to verify that POV. Enough food but nothing luxurious.

It's a shame many aren't aware of what was happening there

I think most music, has a way of bringing people together in a peaceful fashion. It certainly is worth a try. :)
