Medicaid Children Can't Get Flu Shots
| Mon, 09-28-2009 - 12:32am |
My 74 y.o. mother has custody of my stupid meth addict sister's 3 y.o. son. He has Medicaid as backup. She called to get him a flu shot last week and was told that they weren't eligible until February.
Tonight on the local tv news it was said that children would be front of the line for the shots, and extra was put aside for them.
My mother paid for a shot for him, of course... but I'm still ticked off!
What is this about? This possibly deadly flu (from many accounts).. well, it will only affect those with good insurance, or cash, or what?
Turning away this flu shot for poor children is just wrong. It makes me sick at my stomach.

I gather
Thanks both of you.
I tried calling my mother back for more clarification, but her phone's out of order this morning!
So I called my son, and he said my nephew had both the flu and the swine flu shot... but I'm not sure that he really knows!
I will be checking this out further, cause something doesn't sound right, does it?

No it doesn't.
You prompted me to call for my flu shot. My doc does it mass production style which is really efficient. He doesn't have the swine flu vaccine in yet.
In my area, some DR.s no longer give flu shots, or vaccines. It's been this way for a long time. You are told to go the the Health Dept. or like now our local grocery store give out the shots.
I don't think it matters what type if insurance you have. Maybe what your co-pay is. My daughter had pretty good insurance but was told to go to Health Dept. for shots.
Thanks.
Luckily my nephew isn't one of the poor children who won't get treatment if Medicaid won't cover something.
