Secret Service Probing Facebook Poll on Obama

Updated 8:15 p.m.
On Sunday, a blogger at The Political Carnival noticed a user-generated poll on Facebook that asked, "Should Obama be killed?" The blogger wrote about the poll, then called the Secret Service to alert them to it.

A day later, Facebook has taken down the poll, and the Secret Service is looking into the matter, the Associated Press reports:

The U.S. Secret Service is investigating an online survey that asked whether people thought President Barack Obama should be assassinated, officials said Monday. The choices were: No, Maybe, Yes, and Yes if he cuts my health care.

The poll, posted Saturday on Facebook, was taken off the popular social networking site quickly after company officials were alerted to its existence.

A Facebook official said the question was created not by the company but by an independent person using an add-on application that has been suspended from the site.

"The third-party application that enabled an individual user to create the offensive poll was brought to our attention this morning," said Barry Schnitt, Facebook's spokesman for policy.

Because the application was disabled, the responses to the nonscientific polls are not available.

"We're working with the U.S. Secret Service, but they'll need to provide any details of their investigation," Schnitt said.

"We are aware of , and we will take the appropriate investigative steps," said Darrin Blackford, a Secret Service spokesman. "We take these things seriously."

It's quite alarming how many lunatic fringers there are in this world. I worry about Obama's safety to be honest.

So much hate out there right now. Sickens me. Do these folks truly believe that a man of his color, a minority, is going to risk his life, or that of a family member, to force something down the throat of the majority that they feel is racist? Socialistic? Nobody would do that in my opinion. He's doing what he feels is right for this country at this time and place. He wants to do whatever it takes to get this economy back on track; he wants to try to heal all the wounds inflicted on the rest of the world by the prior regime; he wants to do what every other major country already has done......allow its people to have affordable health coverage and not continue to line the pockets of crooked politicians and medical insurance giants.

But the lunatics, the haters, the people that can be so easily manipulated by the radio and print talking heads.....those people are a definite threat, and will continue to be as time goes forward. Just my thoughts on things for what they're worth.

I agree. I think he is trying to do the best he can for our country under the circumstances, but there is a growing group of loons who are obssessed with the ideas they read and hear from the right-wing heroes.

Your point about feeling the same way about Bush as they feel toward Obama, and that bipartisanship is the norm now sure hit home with me. As much as I disliked Bush, the right now feels just as strongly about Obama....and both sides feel very strongly that their view is correct. Could we BOTH be right??

OMG, that's a scary thought, isn't it. Food for thought, I must say. Great point. Thank you.

***"our government really is one big conspiracy - we just can't separate ourselves from the bipartisanship that keeps us from focusing on the REAL issues?"***

I also agree with this. I believe JFK and his brother were killed by a conspiracy to maintain the status quo they both threatened. Just as is being directed at our President Obama. I fear for our President and his family, too.

I think no one wants to wake up to this reality. Instead, it's easy to be distracted with the hate mongering that is purposely being maintained and escalated, in order to *deliberately* keep people in heated debate and polarized so they do not see...and so no real constructive change is possible that may threaten the old status quo. Keep people's emotions at fever pitch, focusing on "the enemy" on either side, and people won't see the big picture nor the possible consequences, of this "no-holds-barred" separatist attitude that fuels hatred and divisiveness, and makes finding solutions impossible. Its about fixing our broken country, not about a pissing contest. It's going to take *all* of us to accomplish the repairs. Tragically, I have come to accept that, for some, there is no desire at all to fix what's broken, but to solely maintain the old status quo of virulent self-interest at the cost of the rest of the country and its people.

"many of the same thoughts I had about Bush"

I disagreed with many of his policies... privatising SS, pre-emptive war.... Thought he wasn't qualified to be Pres.
