so give Chicago the Olympic Games.
"We need all of our children to be exposed to the Olympic ideals that athletes from around the world represent, particularly this time in our nation’s history, where athletics is becoming more of a fleeting opportunity. Funds dry up so it becomes harder for kids to engage in sports, to learn how to swim, to even ride a bike. When we’re seeing rates of childhood obesity increase, it is so important for us to raise up the platform of fitness and competition and fair play; to teach kids to cheer on the victors and empathize with those in defeat, but most importantly, to recognize that all the hard work that is required to do something special."

"Sports were a gift I shared with my dad -- especially the Olympic Games. Some of my best memories are sitting on my dad's lap, cheering on Olga and Nadia, Carl Lewis and others for their brilliance and perfection."
Well let's see .... Carl Lewis made the Olympic team in 1980, however as the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics she didn't see him then. In the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, Carl Lewis competed and won 4 Olympic medals, equaling Jesse Owen's record. So yes, she could have seen him then. However as she was 20 years old I would think that's be a bit old to be sitting in Dad's lap.
I find Michelle's statement encouraging. Anyone that disagrees, just doesn't like her or the political party she is in. Some people just want to find something negative about anything, just to be heard...

***Heck all of my kids have sat on my lap after becoming adults. Didn't realize there was an age limit on that.
****
I was thinking the same thing. My neice was 22 or 23 the last time I saw her with her legs slung over her moms lap, watching something on TV, cuddled up together. I remember thinking, as I held my one year old, I hope me and my dd stay that close to each other.
This oughtta freak
You know she didn't say YOUR children were fat - nice misleading thread title. You may dispute the fact that childhood obesity rates have risen in the past decade - but you would be wrong. Michelle Obama, much as it may disappoint you, was correct. In fact, according to the American Medical Association those rates have quadrupled in the past 30 years. Guess now you will be accusing the AMA of being a 'liberal spin machine'?
Study: Childhood obesity, diseases have quadrupled
October 03, 2008
According to a new study, childhood obesity and obesity-related diseases such as asthma and diabetes have quadrupled in the past 30 years. The report, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that the increase in chronic illness could overwhelm the healthcare system in upcoming years.
