You already know why, to help them determine the amount of ice on that region of the moon.

No I don't already know and if I did then why would I be asking this question.

Going to the moon to crash a space ship to see about building a space station or whatever it is, I don't care if they were going up there to bake cookies. It seems pointless when there is so much more to be concerned

Hi, and welcome to the board :)

~Two things: OUR economy needs that money~

I'm gathering that much of the money was spent before your current economic problems, as the program has been in place for some years now. The craft itself (ie. the The Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS)) was launched into earth's orbit in the spring.

~playing GOD because these people are curious will have us all ...~

In what way?

~There is a natural energy and balance in the world, atmosphere, etc. Crashing things into the moon for the purpose of research is risky~

I'm not sure what you mean, sorry. What is it that you think could go wrong?

Objects crash into the moon frequently. That's why its surface is so marked with craters.

"The image of this impact, what we're doing with the moon, is something that occurs naturally four times a month on the moon, whether we're there or not." (LCROSS principal investigator Tony Colaprete)

~No I don't already know and if I did then why would I be asking this question.~ ~I don't care what the reasoning is~

I'm a bit confused. If you don't care, why did you ask?

~this is MY opinion and that's that~

Just to clarify, this is a debate board, the purpose of which is to provide a space on the site to share ideas, debate, etc., current events. You are welcome not to respond when your posts are queried, but people are bound to continue in that vein.

As an aside, re: perceived risks in terms of physics, LCROSS principal investigator Tony Colaprete:

""The impact has about 1 million times less influence on the moon than a passenger's eyelash falling to the floor of a 747 during flight."

I was just asking what people felt. I was surprised to see that much money was being spent on crashing something into the moon for research when in fact that money is needed for other things at this time.

Oh it is a debate board? Well then I posted in the wrong place. If you have the privileges to delete then by all means delete my post. I thought it was for sharing current news.

Thanks.

I have no feelings about it, but hope that the information offered was of some help.

ed. for brevity.

Yeah, it's going to be a pretty insignificant event given the amount of energy released during many of the other impacts on the moon.
