To be completely truthful, tonsils in a child would be removed by a pediatric ENT, so quite possibly the doctor WAS

After dd's birth by C-section, I was so impressed that the anesthesiologist came by 3 mornings in a row to say "hi." Then I got the bill. Each "hi" was billed as a $150 consultation.

I lived in an area of northern Michigan with few doctors. When a couple of my brothers had their tonsillectomies back in the 1960's, our family doctor was the surgeon. There was no choice unless we wanted to make reservations and drive 3 hours to a specialist. I had a minor outpatient surgery on my ankle also performed by my family doctor. Again...this was back in the early 1970's. I never had a pediatrician when growing up, because there wasn't one within any reasonable distance. Nowdays, if someone is going to have any treatment of any kind, a specialist seems to be the way to go. It is no problem here in my metro, but in my hometown, there is still that long-distance drive if someone wants a specialist. No wonder medicine costs so much. Everybody wants (and gets) a specialist for every procedure.

We had a GP instead of a ped as well. There was a ped in our town, but we did not like him. Our GP, OTOH, was a very sweet man and we all liked him. He also did gyn exams for me, I remember, and minor procedures.

I had my hand crushed in a car door in 1973. I was taken to the emergency room where the ER doctor (not a orthopedist) manipulated my finger bones back into semblance of normalcy, put on a plaster cast

Same here only treated by a GP when growing-up. He made house calls!
