#1.
Let's remember that these are scenerios. We aren't actually facing these situation at the moment. The adrenaline isn't pumping,
Well written.
I would not shoot in any of the scenarios.
Just to add, re: #1, a clearly dangerous scenario, I'd run as I'd never be able to "out shoot" someone prepared while I was terrified.

Do you want to elaborate?

~I'm fascinated by people who are certain that they either couldn't or wouldn't defend themselves, even if they had the ability and the legal right.~
Oh, okay :)
Well, re: the 3rd scenario, that's about defending my old car - not me.
Re: the 2nd, I've had an intruder at the door, twice.. a young man with developmental delay who was worried because he thought the wrong car was in my lane (ie. came to help *me), and an elderly woman with dementia.
Re: the 3rd, I've been confronted by someone with a weapon. In the time it would have taken me to get a gun and load it (as a mom of many, I'd never be leaving a loaded gun in my bag in the livingroom, as per the scenario) I may well have found myself in much worse straits than I did by leaving.
I've got the ability and legal right to do all sorts of things I opt not to do. For me the OP wasn't so much about whether I'd have the right to do any of that, but whether it makes sense IMHO for me to do so, knowing myself as I do.

Martin, I'm curious as to what you think you'd do in re: to those various scenarios.
Kate
They seem pretty clear cut to me:
1)Shoot or be shot.
2) Hold the bad guy at gun point and pray there's a phone
