They seem pretty clear cut to me, too :) our answers are just different.

I'm curious, though, would you have left a loaded gun in a bag in your living room in the first place (ie. scenario 1)? Do you have kids?

I have a concealed carry permit, so there is always a gun nearby. I operate on the principle that it is better to have one and not need it than vice versa. My youngest child is a college graduate, so he's not an issue, but all guns in our house are stored in such a way as to be safe.

In the first scenario, since I could run back to my bag, I likely could run out the entry door. I probably would be out the door and down the street screaming at the top of my lungs. My bag would probably still be where I had left it earlier. In the second scenario, I'd holler at the person with hands in the air that I'd like nothing better than to eliminate him. I'd have him move to a position with his hands up against the wall while I dial 911 to tell them, I'm holding someone. In the third scenario, it is only a car, and I have insurance. The thief gets my car, and I call the police to advise them that I just witnessed my car being stolen and give as many details as possible. So I guess my thoughts are that I'd avoid ever shooting at a person if I felt I had a reasonable option to not do so while still remaining safe. It wouldn't be a matter of whether I could avoid criminal charges or a lawsuit. You don't shoot at people unless you want to kill them.

Those are better answers than I gave. You've got a clearer head than I do. Bravo.

Just for the record - most self defense and legal experts advise that you should never shoot to wound.

Assuming that you cannot change the scenarios (like many have done on the thread) and I have to make a decision based on exactly the scenario as it's written, I would do the following:

Scenario 1: If I find myself face to face with an armed stranger in my house and he is pointing his gun at me, I would shoot.

Scenario 2: If the perp is standing there with his hands in the air, I would not shoot.

Scenario 3: Man stealing car....I wouldn't shoot. I wouldn't get close enough to the car to let him run me over.
