Women's health vs penile enhancements

Hello. New here, but need to air an issue that's bothering me quite a bit lately: How our representatives are willing to abandon a full appropriate spectrum of health care for 50% of the US population. This issue really rubbed into my feeling of vulnerability recently, when I read the below quote taken from the Philadelphia Inquirer, written by columnist Karen Heller, about the recent transit strike there (Nov 7, 2009). --

"You have to admire the massive brakes of SEPTA union boss Willie Brown. He authorized TWU Local 234's World Series surprise 3 a.m. strike Tuesday, which put the city in one perpetual traffic jam, stranding the very sort of workers (and their children) he represents....

"Unlike SEPTA employees, many workers contribute to their health-care coverage because that's what living in this economy means.

"But, hey, Viva Viagra!

"Yes, it appears that labor issues are not the only dysfunction troubling SEPTA workers. The Daily News reported that some are unhappy that their current health-care plans cover - and here it's important to use caps for emphasis - ONLY 10 VIAGRA PILLS A MONTH.

"Some union members want the pill - again, excuse the shouting - DAILY, which makes you worry that every bus, trolley, and subway route has the potential to turn into an express, particularly during those problematic four-hour peaks in service.

"Look, I don't want to dump solely on the SEPTA workers, who average $52,000 in annual wages.

"There's reason to dump on SEPTA bosses as well.

They promised the moon and the stars to workers - and look how well that's turned out...."

Personally, I wonder what the female Septa workers received in counter-balance to male sexual enhancement. Gee, could it be insurance coverage for those golly fun gyn exams?

I'm going to let this post stand or fall on its own merits. BTW, I'm a post-menopausal woman who yearns for equal representation in this country.

On another board I regularly visit, I said I thought it was wrong that my insurance company covers viagra/cialis, implants, and therapy for erectile disfunction but doesn't cover birth control pills for women. How fair is that?

Welcome to the board.

It's illogical providing men with the Viagra type drugs & not covering BC pills for women. We all want to see unwanted pregnancies stopped/reduced & the products to do this SB covered by insurance IMO.

I wish we had YOUR insurance. My husband is like many men who had undergone treatment for prostate cancer. They lose a lot of their former sexual functionality and depend on drugs like Viagra.

I'm sorry, mombitsy, that sounds hard. I'm happy if healthcare plans include men's & women's sexual dysfunction, even though that's so open to misuse by persons just craving more sex. I don't know how to phrase that w/o sounding judgmental -- nothing wrong with good sex! But I hope everyone will understand what I mean.

And to everyone, I really do mean the full spectrum of female health care, not just birth control. My intent isn't to turn this into an abortion post, but merely to state that, in my belief, pregnancy should be a matter between a woman, her doctors to some extent, & the man responsible under the right conditions. And that if health care is publicly funded at all, a woman's choices along the way need to be included. I raise the Viagra issue to counter-balance this, since at least some government-sponsored plans apparently already include male sexual health. And that latter should be part of any conscientious discussion among congressional & senatorial representatives of 100% of the American population. What do you think?

I think women should, ummm, give men no reason to need cialis, viagra, etc.

Yes, it's true that Viagra is more important to the lawmakers than necessary medication that save lives.

A significant majority of the members of Congress (House and Senate) are men of a certain age.

My previous tongue in cheek comment aside, I completely agree.

"It's not just womens health but all support for women seem to get the short end of the stick."

Well, also tongue in cheek, men are just trying to keep from having their stick short ended too....;) That was terribly inappropriate on many levels...blush. But, but, it just seemed to go right along with your prior statement.

"We all want to see unwanted pregnancies stopped....."

Reminds me of being in Bombay, India back in my Navy days.....a huge billboard on the street showing a picture of a cheap 35 MM camera with a caption under it saying anyone getting their tubes tied would receive the camera FREE!! Hmmm, wonder how many folks took advantage of that...?
