The Dr. that says this child is "stoned" and negates the fact that he was wasting away on THIRTEEN pharmaceuticals before, is an idiot!

We also know that the ancient Greeks had discovered that certain mineral waters helped bipolar patients. In modern times it was discovered that the sources in question contain lithium, still used in the treatment of bipolar.

**Specifically she suggested that he had childhood schizophrenia, which was the term used for what we today would call non-Kanner's autism. So my grandmother pulled them out of that school, since she was convinced that they were brilliant (which they are in a way) and by the standards of her day, brilliant could not co-exist with any flaws.**

This was basically my mothers response when the same thing was suggested about my brother. He is schizophrenic. He was not properly treated until he was in his 50's, after 2 failed marriages, abusing and destroying the relationships and lives of his three sons and spending most of his adult life as an addict. But "he has a genius I.Q." according to my mom, so....

The waters of Calistoga (I believe) are high in lithium. Many of the "sanitariums" and resorts,

I think if the pot worked, then great! Taking 13 different drugs, with their side effects, strain on the organs and costs to the family sounds more sinister than pot to me.

Yes, thankfully, you might say, my uncle really is autistic rather than being a schizophrenia sufferer. My grandmother's way of dealing with her adored twins would not cut it by today's standards, but for the time and circumstances, what she did was probably the best that could be done.

Still, denial is a powerful thing.

Interesting, I did not know that about Calistoga. In Europe, the standard place to send the mad members of the family (funds allowing) was Switzerland. I wonder if something similar holds for the various spas there.

Why not the hue and cry over Ritalin (which is also thought to be addictive)? Marijuana has such a stigma associated that it seems that researchers don't want to investigate all the good that it could do.

Interesting. I think there is at least as much "hue and cry" over Ritalin as there is about marijuana.

I don't think researchers get too bogged down in "stigma", but I think research funding can.

The big difference I see in Ritalin vs marijuana is that Ritalin is highly regulated and marijuana is nearly always used without any medical supervision at all. So it is surprising to me that Ritalin similar criticism.

There are a few doctors who suspect some kind of link between autism, tourette's and the major psychoses.

That combined with the link between marijuanaand schizophrenia make me very wary of approving of giving an autistic child marijuana. Marijuana use during adolescence increases the risk of schizophrena for those who are genetically vulnerable.

Seriously? So if word gets out that I give my kid Ritalin it's going to make the news and my parenting skills will be called into question? Hmmm! Somehow I don't think there will be as much "hue and cry"

<<>>

Ritalin doesn't get nearly as much criticism (not even close). Millions of kids take it daily and rarely does a parent get a hard time from someone who matters.

And what incredibly small percentage of the population would that be?
