Personal emails@ work can get you fired

You probably don't think twice about sending personal messages through your work e-mail. But sending e-mails about a seemingly innocuous hobby cost one financial advisor his job when his employer tapped into his work account and read his messages. (see link)

What a lot of people fail to realize is that when they are at work they are on the employer’s property, using the employer’s equipment and internet service, and on the employer’s time.
It definitely makes sense to know the policy of the company one works for.
Yes, having to hear people yak on and on about their personal issues, etc. on the phone is annoying (regardless of whether it's their cell or the employer's phone).
I know of a lot of employers who do make their policies clear upfront, and (as mentioned) many of them require that a new hire) or even existing employees sign a document verifying theh have been given a copy of the
Firing the guy was a bit over the top. But let's be realistic. In today's economy employers are looking for reasons to dump employees, and if they can find a way to do that without getting hooked for unemployment then they're twice as happy.
Now, if they guy wasn't doing his job, wasn't producing, was letting the Fantasy Football get in the way of what he was supposed to be doing, THEN that's a problem. If he'd had numerous warnings about this offense, but continued to do it, then that's a problem.
I'm at work right now. I'm adult enough to know what I have ahead of me to do today and how much time it will take me, and I know I can squeeze in a few minutes of iVillage before I get started. No one micromanages here in our office. Each person does what they are supposed to do
If Mr. Pettigrew or anyone else (had)/has downtime maybe they should ask if there is something they can do to help someone else instead of doing personal things – on the employer’s time and using the employers equipment.
There’s no such thing as smoke breaks – a break is a break and people can do whatever they choose.

First of all, I agree with the firing of Pettigrew, I don’t see where it was over the top at all.
