To be clear, I'm sharing this *not to bash or poke fun at any particular religion, but to shine light on an *individual, Pat Robertson, whose broadcasting network is carried in hundreds of countries and whose political influence has been considerable (incl. re: laws effecting families like mine):

Pat Robertson: Haiti 'Cursed' By 'Pact To The Devil'
Televangelist Pat Robertson said Wednesday that earthquake-ravaged Haiti has been "cursed" by a "pact to the devil."
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," he said on Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club." "They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal."
Robertson said that "ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other" and he contrasted Haiti with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic.
"That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle; on the one side is Haiti on the other is the Dominican Republic," he said. "Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I'm optimistic something good may come. But right now we are helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable."

Hmmmm...and the Pope promoted a pastor who stated that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment for New Orlean's permissive sexual
((The pact with the devil is nothing more than a myth. Referencing it now is sick, inhumane & cold-hearted. Period.))
ITA! However, in the opening paragraph of the thread the poster did say she didn't want to bash any particular religion....but.....
"but to shine light on an *individual, Pat Robertson, whose broadcasting network is carried in hundreds of countries and whose political influence has been considerable (incl. re: laws effecting families like mine"
Therefore, it isn't JUST about Pat Robertson. She insinuates that his political influence is substantial and it affects her lifestyle thru the laws implemented by people who agree with Pat Robertson.
I'm thinking that's a bit of a stretch and it really is intended to bash conservatives...particularly Christian conservatives.

That's not an insinuation, that's the truth. Thankfully, not all conservative Christians think like Pat Robertson and his followers.
~liberal outrage~
I'm not outraged at Robertson. I pity him.
Comparing this situation to that of Islamic extremists is interesting, though.
Kate
~She insinuates that his political influence is substantial~
I'd suggest that you learn more about him.
~and it affects her lifestyle thru the....~
No, his political influence has had an effect on laws re: families "like" mine. My own family is just dandy, but then we have only a very few in my country who follow him.
~it really is intended to bash conservatives...particularly Christian conservatives~
You are way off base about my intent, and frankly - I should know.
Kate
Deflection from the topic, and misrepresenting my intent, doesn't surprise me. It often happens when I call out Robertson and his organizations for this or that, possibly because when I do so it's over things that are pretty indefensible.
(eta Just to clarify, I mean in general, nothing in particular re: this thread.)

I have a minute so wanted to address this again.
~Well...I guess there is one difference~
I can think of a number of differences, including that Robertson was *blaming Haiti - further, blaming a country full of *fellow *Christians - for this tragedy of which they are suffering.
~intended to bash ... particularly Christian conservatives~
Ironically, it's Robertson who blamed a country full of Roman Catholics for this crisis. On top of that he thinks that they need to learn to start turning to God... as if they haven't been doing that all their lives *already.
You are trying to shame the wrong person. I forgive you, but spare me the indignation as it's misplaced and I don't buy it.
Kate
((You are trying to shame the wrong person. I forgive you..)
Sorry to disappoint you but I am not asking for your forgiveness nor do I want it.
I was merely pointing out the hypocrisy of many liberals who are outraged at Pat Robertson (rightfully so) but turned a blind eye to the Muslims who rejoiced in the streets when Americans in New Orleans were dying during Katrina.
By the reactions I see on these threads, it is still clear that nobody would dare criticize a Muslim but are quick to criticize a Christian. Both should be criticized!
