To be clear, I'm sharing this *not to bash or poke fun at any particular religion, but to shine light on an *individual, Pat Robertson, whose broadcasting network is carried in hundreds of countries and whose political influence has been considerable (incl. re: laws effecting families like mine):

~~~~~
Pat Robertson: Haiti 'Cursed' By 'Pact To The Devil'
Televangelist Pat Robertson said Wednesday that earthquake-ravaged Haiti has been "cursed" by a "pact to the devil."
"Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it," he said on Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club." "They were under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon III, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you'll get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it's a deal."
Robertson said that "ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other" and he contrasted Haiti with its neighbor, the Dominican Republic.
"That island of Hispaniola is one island. It is cut down the middle; on the one side is Haiti on the other is the Dominican Republic," he said. "Dominican Republic is prosperous, healthy, full of resorts, etc. Haiti is in desperate poverty. Same island. They need to have and we need to pray for them a great turning to god and out of this tragedy I'm optimistic something good may come. But right now we are helping the suffering people and the suffering is unimaginable."
Pffftt! What a load of nonsense. Were those Muslims rejoicing in the streets in America? Were they Americans celebrating the death and destruction of an American city?
There is a huge difference and you should know that.
~Sorry to disappoint you but~
I was happy to give it out of the goodness of my heart, no request required.
~I was merely pointing out ...~
Except for the part where you made erroneous claims about my intent in posting the OP.
http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-elinthenews/?msg=+16545.24
~it is still clear that nobody would dare criticize a Muslim~
Another erroneous claim. :( Even in this thread there's criticism. For example:
"I find those men to be just as evil, vile, and despicable as any other religious extremist."
http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-elinthenews/?msg=16545.15+
~Both should be criticised!~
Yup :) However, while you see no difference between the situations, others have managed to do that - given that there are, in fact, pretty significant differences.
Let's face it, it only makes sense that you'll hear a lot of criticism from Christians of horrible things said by a Christian leader about other Christians (incl. Robertson about suffering Haitians, who are Catholic) than about something expected. Of course extremist Islamics who hate the US would rejoice ...what do you expect?
~Both should be criticized!~
Yup, and both have been criticized.
I totally agree with your post :)
If I haven't said so before, welcome to the board.
Quite a few differences, for sure.
Is there maybe a problem with some posts, or parts of posts, not appearing on the board? That might explain some claims made (eta to which I've just responded in post 16545.34). I can't think of any other reason.
ITA! However, in the opening paragraph of the thread the poster did say she didn't want to bash any particular religion....but.....
I'm glad that we agree that Robertson comment was horrific & completely unacceptable.
Therefore, it isn't JUST about Pat Robertson. She insinuates that his political influence is substantial and it affects her lifestyle thru the laws implemented by people who agree with Pat Robertson.
His influence has
Thanks :)
I'm glad that was cleared up. The only person bashing Christians in re: to this thread, in any way at all, is Pat Roberson himself.... a Catholic country no less.
He's quite interesting, isn't he? I've followed his career since the mid 1970's, and having coincidentally known several very famous evangelists (before they became famous), the genre has been of interest to me in various ways.
I've loved your board for years - thanks for the hard work!
Just a quick fyi... If you have any question in future about my intent when posting, please ask me rather than inventing stuff and discussing me with other posters.
Also, I'm no longer convinced at all by your claim that liberals didn't express outrage over the rejoicing by extremists at the time, given that you missed it even within this very thread just yesterday. Nice try, but...
Thanks.
